 Subtle yet rich aromas of grilled meat, black olive and dark red fruits. Full-bodied, very soft and silky, with ultrarefined tannins. The finish lasts for minutes.  Jean-Michel Cazes was rather dismissive of this treasure exhumed from his cellar ('ce n'est pas grandiose') but I loved it - especially since it had not a trace of 1988's stubbornness about it. Sweet, round and rich, it was initially served blind and was obviously something exceptional. Lovely cleanliness as well as flattering sumptuousness. Tannins difficult to discern. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

 It has been several years since I last encountered the Petrus ’88. You can look back on it as a stepping-stone to the momentous 1989 and 1990. Youthful in colour, the bouquet seems a little aloof and distant. It is well defined with forest floor and touches of dried violets, but the tertiary notes are quite pronounced. The palate is medium-bodied, nicely focused though missing a little vigour at 25-year of age. There is a conservative here, but also there is breeding and aristocracy not fully released. But in retrospect, the ’88 gives you a taste of what is to come. Tasted March 2013. (NM)  (11/2013)

It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.
