2018 Domaine Marc Colin Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1483486 95-97 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, which comes from Colin’s 0.19-hectare parcel of 35-year-old vines, has a stunning, beautifully focused bouquet that needs little encouragement to unleash citrus peel, limestone, sherbet lemon and yellow flowers. The palate is extremely well balanced with hints of lemon curd and almond on the entry, which dovetails into a rich but very delineated midpalate of vanilla and even a touch of coconut. This feels long and languorous in the mouth, and the finish lasts for over a minute. Fabulous. Three barrels produced. (NM) Inner quote mark (1/2020)

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru was very put together when I tasted it, opening in the glass with notes of pear, Meyer lemon, white flowers, pastry cream and a deft application of new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, muscular and concentrated, with fine balance and a long, saline finish. Damien Colin continues his progression towards longer élevage in larger vessels: In 2017, he purchased more 300- and 350-liter barrels, a trend that continued in 2018, and after a year in wood, his wines now see a protracted sojourn in tank on the lees. He's adding less sulfur dioxide at harvest, finding that fermentations last longer. And longer élevage with attendant natural clarification meant that he was able to bottle his 2017s entirely without fining or filtration. Those 2017s, revisited from bottle, confirmed their fine showing last year; and 2018, rounder and more immediate in style, looks to be another success for Domaine Marc Colin, as my notes testify. 92-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark *Burghound Don't Miss!!* Once again there is a vague suggestion of the exotic to the beautifully layered nose that freely offers aromas of both white and yellow orchard fruit, acacia blossom, Asian-style tea and a hint of passion fruit. The sleekly muscular and overtly powerful broad-shouldered flavors coat the palate with dry extract while displaying outstanding length on the youthfully austere finish. As one would reasonably expect, this is quite tightly wound at present and will require at least 6 to 8 years to be approachable. Inner quote mark (6/2020)

K&L Notes

95-97 points Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "One new barrel in two. Pretty and classic full lemon. A full white fruit in the sunshine nose, but with balance and class, then massive flesh on the palate, all in balance, heady but poised with a tremendous follow through. Far more detail emerges at the back as the finish keeps on extending, with different registers of fine white fruit."
