2018 Fratelli Barale "Castlé" Barbera d'Alba Superiore

SKU #1473969

The Azienda Agricola Barale traces its roots all the way back to 1870 when Barolo wine had just appeared on the scene in the Langhe, promoted by the Marchesi Falletti and Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour. Francesco Barale, great-grandfather of the current owner, was among the pioneers in the production of this blessed wine. Today Sergio Barale and daughters Eleonora and Gloria carry on the centuries old family tradition. The nineteenth-century manor house in the historic center of Barolo is the administrative and commercial headquarters of the company. Nearby are the historic underground cellars, where new technologies have been introduced in accordance with traditional rules. The vinification and aging processes adopted are aimed at producing balanced wines in which the characteristics of the grape variety and region of origin prevail. Castlé is the Cru that lies on the other side of the narrow, long valley where the Cannubi Cru is located, at the foothills of the Barolo village. The fruit extraction is moderate with a ruby red hue that's translucent. The mouth feel is fresh with aromas that veer towards orchard fruit, chocolate, and mint. There is no new oak on this bottling.

This is classic Fratelli Barale Barbera with dark ripe black cherries and plum, full-bodied with some minerals and dust on the very long and well integrated finish. I would let this open for an hour or so and serve with a grilled Portobello mushroom or burgers and some great friends.

When I need a versatile wine that will pair with a wide variety of foods I often reach for Gamay, but recently opted for this Barbera d'Alba to try something new. Does it taste like Gamay? No. But I discovered it shares similar characteristics to my usual French go-to. The low tannins, high acidity and bright red cherry fruit make this an approachable and easy to enjoy wine with practically anything. Try with a bowl of potato chips, pulled pork or mushroom stroganoff. And yes, pizza and pasta too.
