2009 Sigalas Vinsanto Santorini Greece 500ml

SKU #1459380 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2009 Vinsanto is a 75/25 blend of Assyrtiko and Aidani, aged for 72 months in used oak. It comes in with 280 grams per liter of residual sugar and just 9% alcohol. A full-on dessert wine, this is unctuous and very sweet, but one thing Vinsanto always has is that fine acidity in the background, the feeling of tension segmenting the wine and then lifting the fruit. I've seen some with less perceptible sugar, the key word there being "perceptible," but this is a fine experience still, laced with hints of caramel and apricots. It's pretty delicious and the acidity levels are still impressive. There is ample tension on that long finish. These last indefinitely, so don't hesitate to buy some to age as well as to drink today. It will continue to improve in the cellar, pulling its parts together and acquiring complexity. When some of the sugar starts to blow off, this might be entitled to an uptick, but at the moment, it seems a step short of the last vintage I saw. That means it is still awfully good. Drink it well chilled. The price applies to a 500ml bottle from which this was tasted. (MS) (8/2017)
