2016 Solomon Hills Estate Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay (Elsewhere $50)

SKU #1451349 94 points Vinous

The 2016 Chardonnay Solomon Hills is fabulous. Creamy and resonant on the palate, with terrific freshness, the 2016 is a wonderfully complete wine that will drink well right out of the gate. Lemon oil, mint and white pepper all develop in the glass. Above all else, the Solomon Hills Chardonnay manages to be both texturally expansive and also incredibly elegant. It has been terrific in two recent tastings. (AG) (9/2018)

K&L Notes

Winemaker's Notes: "Exotic aromas of lemon verbena, oysters, iodine, and wet rock on the nose. The flavors of this vintage echo the nose along with a focused and very textural mid-palate. Hand harvested at night and whole cluster pressed. It was then barrel fermented with native yeast and malolactic fermentations. Aging was sur lie for 16 months in French oak; 25% new. This wine was bottled unfiltered."

There is no vagueness that this is a cool climate chardonnay that is reminiscent of old-world chardonnay. Right off the bat, there is a noticeable aroma of sea salt and kelp, followed by cortland apples, golden delicious apples, seckel pears, and pepo. There is a clear edge of minerality, flintiness and wet stones on the palate that I find to be a positive attribute in this wine. This is very enjoyable and dry, definitely the other side of the coin when it comes to California chardonnay.

A racy, zesty, saline, mineral driven style; this cool climate Chardonnay from a highly acclaimed site in Santa Maria Valley is bursting with citrus, fennel, struck match and flint. Savory almond skin, pie crust notes frame the white florals and Meyer lemon. Through a Burgundian lens this sits somewhere between Chablis and Meursault; a keen acid line and lots of salinity meets nutty, flinty, focused power. Great with Dungeness Crab or Moules Marinière. Plus...our price is just as keen and sharp as this wines searing acidity...$20 off the winery release price!

This is a fun and fresh Chardonnay that balks at the drizzly winter months. Coming from the Santa Maria Valley, the growers have just one block that they grow for this Chard on sand dunes in a windy and cold climate. The result is a zippy and salty white wine full of fresh flower notes and ripe rich fruits. There's a lemon-lime streak that is both zesty and pithy with great acid, followed up with tones of peach, nectarine, and struck matchstick. 94 points vinous

Uncut lemonade, keffir lime, ripping acidity. This is Mosel Riesling does California Chardonnay. There's a beauty in the austerity of this wine and a singularity in the amount of power it puts on. This one is a head-turner for sure. For me, California Chardonnay is one of the most exciting wine categories out there--it goes beyond the question of oak or stainless steel. Wine like this are an incredible example of a unique Chardonnay that expresses site, variety, and perspective--all in a package that is almost crystalline in structure and clarity.
