 This is stunning. A richer and more expressive and more exuberant nose than the regular Les Clos bottling. A complete array of yellow stone fruit and citrus fruit on show here. The palate has a very fleshy and very smooth, white-nectarine and white-peach core. Long, sleek and elegant.  (8/2019)

 The 2017 Chablis Les Clos Clos des Hospices Grand Cru has a very well defined bouquet, but a little tight and backward at the moment, gradually unfurling to reveal blood orange, honeysuckle and a slightly resinous tincture. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, and cohesive with a finish that surfeits with tension and sense of energy. This is a complex, quite cerebral but delicious Les Clos.(NM)  (8/2018)

 As usual, the 2017 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos Clos des Hospices dans Les Clos is richer and broader than the domaine's regular Les Clos, revealing a lavish bouquet of peaches, honeycomb, yellow orchard fruit, fresh pastry and white flowers. On the palate, it's full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, though balanced by lively acids and concluding with a penetrating finish. The choice between the two is more a matter of taste than of quality.  Here the wood regimen is more evident and like the Blanchot, includes notes of vanilla on the floral, spice, wet stone and overtly ripe pear and white peach scents. There is bit more mid-palate concentration to the big-bodied and powerful flavors that also coat the palate on the markedly saline finish that is not quite as complex, at least not today. Still, this too is quite promising plus it should drink well both young and with up to a decade of cellaring.  (10/2018)

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut. In France's Burgundy, Chardonnay is the source of the prized wines of Chablis, Corton-Charlemagne, M√Ęcon, Meursault and Montrachet. It also the foundation of exceptional Champagne, where it is blended with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier or vinified on its own into Blanc de Blancs. True French Chablis is a delicate, stony, crisp Chardonnay, bearing no resemblance to the anonymous plonk so labeled here.
