 So fresh and elegant with more than enough concentration and structure, this is a fine example of a 2015 Reserva. Ripe-blackberry, licorice, smoke and bourbon notes. I love the velvety texture of the long, intense finish. Better from 2019 and with long aging potential.  (8/2018)

 The red blend 2015 Rioja Reserva is 80% Tempranillo with 12% Graciano, 6% Mazuelo and 2% Garnacha, a little more Graciano and Mazuelo, something logical in ripe and warm years like 2015. It's produced with grapes from a diversity of the 30 different plots within the estate, to represent the character of if. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in American oak barrels for 18 months. It's spicy and somewhat balsamic, with some dusty tannins. (LG)  (6/2019)

Though one of the oldest Rioja bodegas, dating back to the mid-19th century, Marqués de Murrieta is not resting on its laurels. They continue to produce excellent wines big hits with their customers and critics alike. They farm all their own grapes on their large, contiguous vineyard just outside of Logrono, which boasts old vines, a variety of soils from chalky clay to very stony parcels, and a climate that particularly favors not only Tempranillo but some of the region's finest Mazuelo.

This wine wows. I just love smelling this wine. It is lifted with bright and dark tones backed with a warming savory spice and basalm tones, all in perfect balance. It is a wine that is not cerebral wine, it smells great and it tastes even better. But it has the hallmark a great wine for me, I just want to keep smelling it. It is medium-full bodied with an open generous mid-palate, surprisingly so. You expect wines like this to have a firmer structure, but it is almost soft and pliant, almost. It gives the impression of being rich and delicate at the same time. With the fruit, spice and oak tones all effortlessly working to enhance each other. I am just a sucker for wines like this.

This was a joy to taste! The soft nose offers up aromas of leather, plum, dried red fruit, cigar box, and subtle, well-integrated oak. Medium-bodied on the palate, the wine is quite balanced with silky tannins and a long finish. Like liquid velvet! Definitely enjoyable now, but will certainly continue to age beautifully over the next several years. This is an eminently elegant wine from a legendary producer. Don't miss out!

The birth of traditional winemaking in Rioja can be traced back to 1852, when Luciano Murrieta established his historic winery in the town of Logrono, and built Finca Ygay, an impressive chateau inspired by those he'd visited while study abroad in Bordeaux. Now grown to over 300 hectares, the winery went through extensive modernization during the 1980s, and continues to turn out textbook Rioja wines. The 2015 Reserva displays elegant notes of well-ripened blackberries, dried orange peel, pastilles, and baking spices. An admirable, well-integrated blend of Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo, and Garnacha that will pair nicely with grilled lamb and roasted vegetables.

This is tangible proof that you can spend $25 on a bottle of wine and get something of brilliant quality and complexity. This vintage is full of Black pepper, fresh turned earth, mushroom and dark fruit with a hint of black olive and the dusty, oaked finish of great Rioja. Murrieta has always been one of the best producers for the money, and he has come through once again with a heavy hitter. Give this a try and see for yourself!
