2017 Akitu "A2" Pinot Noir Central Otago (White Label)

SKU #1436045 92 points Decanter

Expressive nose of rose petals and strawberry. Cherry and plum, bracken and undergrowth flavours, fine tannins and decent acidity.

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Mainly (two-thirds) Clone 777, the 2017 Pinot Noir A2 includes almost one-fourth whole clusters and one-eighth new French oak. Floral-herbal-stemmy notes still mark the nose, but in a sexy, good-kinky sort of way, adding fragrance to deeper notes of dark cherry and plum. It's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a silky but firm base of tannins and a lingering, slightly tart finish. (JC) (7/2019)

Spend 30 seconds with Andrew Donaldson--Akitu’s winemaker & owner--and you’ll see what passion for Pinot Noir is really all about. He’s a tour-de-force of brillant, crazy winemaking prowess, and also happens to make some of the best Pinot Noir coming out of New Zealand to date. His estate is entirely composed of Pinot Noir, and centered just down the road from Rippon--one of the New Zealand's most iconic wineries. But his meticulous attention to detail is what makes his wines truly special. From the extremes of is Pinot Noir clonal selection in the vineyard, to his attentive light touch in the winery, his wines profoundly speak of place: Central Otago. His “A2” white label was the only Pinot Noir I had on my Thanksgiving table this year, and that is because it is effortlessly joyful and incredibly delicious. Styled as his wine that is perfect now, it rushes you with red fruits: cranberry, strawberry and bright cherry, but the complex aromas yield subtle undercurrents of flowers and spice . It displays all the focus and power that you expect from Central Otago, but with a soft, and accessible weight and texture. For anyone who wants an exposition of Central Otago--I can’t think of a better Pinot Noir than this.

An impossibly pretty wine, this is one I would gladly smell all day. Aromas of rose, strawberry and thyme lead seamlessly into those same flavors on the palate. With a perfect counterpoint of earth and bitter herbs plus acid that just won't quit, this is a steal for the price. Since it's super approachable for most any wine drinker, you'll want to keep this stocked at all times. Whether opened in a wine emergency or just on a Tuesday night, it will never disappoint.

There's nothing quite like the wines of Central Otago. The cool climate, high elevation vineyards benefit from a little extra UV exposure, creating beautifully fruited and fresh renditions of Pinot. What Akitu gets right is using the perfect amount of whole-cluster fermentation to add complexity and earthiness, making this one of the best Pinots for the money in the meantime. It has really nice cola, cranberry, cherry fruit with subtle whiffs of herbs and damp earth, and stellar acidity for balance and longevity.

This spicy, complex Pinot Noir is an unbelievable value for the money. While it is easy to get body and texture from new world Pinot in this price range (and this has both), it is rare to get such an array of interesting flavors and such a good long finish. I found this to have hints of everything from orange blossom to new leather. This will go very well with all kinds of poultry as well as just on its own.

We had the pleasure of meeting Andrew the owner a few months back when he visited K&L to taste the staff on his wines. I loved the wines then and after re-approaching them today it just reaffirmed my initial reaction! Savory and dark, the palate opens with notes of soy, dense earth, hints of mushroom and fleshy fruit. The finish is long and soft with the fruit notes lingering and fading towards warm baking spice. This is a very unique, and frankly stand out Pinot that any wine dirnker would find interesting and delicious!
