2018 Haarmeyer "SRV" Clarksburg Chenin Blanc

SKU #1434621

KL Notes: Craig Haarmeyer is a third generation Sacramenten who has been responsible for coining the term "Sacramento Terroir". He and his family are responsible for all of production, from picking to bottling, and believe in celebrating the history, place, and naturalness of varieties grown around the Sacramento area. Favoring vineyard sites that are grown sustainably and organic, Craig believes in allowing the terroir to express itself with a hands off approach to winemaking, stating "We add nothing but elbow grease." *Natural Wine* Winery Notes: This wine is grown at the Sutter Ranch Vineyard deep in the Clarksburg AVA. Sand and clay and marine breezes sculpt this vineyard which allows us to present a very refreshing dry wine that retains all of the varietal characteristics of Chenin Blanc. Foot treaded, pressed to tank, racked to barrel and tank. Spontaneous fermentation, spontaneous ML, bottled on January 24th.This wine starts with crushed oyster shell, cilantro, lemon peel and lanolin. It's crisp, and lean on the palate with chalky minerality.

Growing up in the Sacramento area, many of my summers were spent with my cousins at their house in Clarksburg. A small river delta town no one has ever heard of 15 minutes south of downtown. Where at the time, the stretch of vineyards that crisscrossed the expanse were the mere backdrop for our day long excursions on our bikes. Until the powerful Delta breeze kicked up and brought us racing back home to fight the chill in our bones as night fell. For years 90% of the grapes grown in Clarksburg (Which has been an AVA since 1985) were sold to wineries outside the area, never allowing the region to fully take off and celebrate its heritage vines. But thanks to winemakers now, like Craig Haarmeyer, this hidden gem of terroir nestled in the delta is taking flight. Haarmeyer strikes gold with the old vine Chenin Blanc vineyards of the area, crafting powerfully expressive wines that resonate a sense of place.
