2016 Hudson Vineyards "Phoenix" Red Blend

SKU #1432814 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2016 Phoenix is composed of 68% Merlot and 32% Cabernet Franc from a collection of four separate vineyards on the ranch. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it reveals an incredible perfume of kirsch, black plums, red currant jelly and red roses with touches of black tea, pencil shavings, cinnamon stick and underbrush plus wafts of black raspberries and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with tons of juicy plums and raspberry inspired flavors with bags of savory and mineral nuances plus a firm, rounded tannins frame, finishing long and earthy. Hudson Vineyard is a name well-known to lovers of the wines of Northern California. The name is a proudly declared vineyard designation donning the labels of some of the most lauded producers, including Kistler and Kongsgaard. Set over 2,000 acres in the Carneros AVA, Hudson Ranch is quite a sight/site to behold. (LPB) (10/2018)

The only red I was able to taste from winemaker Christopher Vandendriesscher, the 2016 Hudson Phoenix checks in as 68% Merlot and 32% Cabernet Franc, all from the estate Hudson Vineyard and aged 20 months in 90% new French oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. It offers a deep purple color as well as an old-school vibe in its black cherry, currant, dried earth, pine, and chocolate-driven aromas and flavors. It has sweet tannins, a great texture, and should continue drinking nicely for another decade or more. (1/2019)

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Merlot

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.
Country:

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
Sub-Region:

California

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
Specific Appellation:

Carneros

- Just across the Golden Gate from San Francisco, Carneros is kept cool by Bay breezes and thick fog, and has long been famous for cool-climate pinot noir, chardonnay and sparkling wine based on the two varietals. Warmer pockets have proved interesting and promising homes for syrah, cabernet and merlot.
