Helen’s Hill continues to be one of our best-value producers. What I love about them is the fact that even their under $20 wines have all the same care and attention to detail that you’d find in some finest wines out there. All the fruit is sourced from their Ingram Road Estate vineyard. Grapes are hand-harvested, and barrel fermented with 100% native yeast. The nose here is soft and supple elements of lemon curd and stone fruits. On the palate, the wine is full and rich with just a hint of soft spice. The acidity has drive all the way to the finish, creating a full bodied, but incredibly balanced chardonnay. This is an impeccably crafted wine that is an absolute steal. With Burgundian inspiration, but new world character, serve this at a party and everyone will be raving.

Fresh, and crisp Chardonnay with citrus zest intermingling with ripe green apples finishing with great acidity and lemon zest on the finish. I would have a glass of this Chardonnay everyday!

You'd be hard pressed to find a better value Chardonnay in the whole store. Part of me wishes these wines would stay under the radar so they can remain at this unbelievable price, and part of me wants to scream from the rooftops what a killer deal these are. Bright and fresh with just a supple touch of roundness from the oak usage. There is nothing I don't like about this wine.

Another delicious wine from Helen's Hill! This Chardonnay has always been one of my favorites. Supple, medium bodied, juicy, and fresh, with lemon meringue pie-like notes, lemon curd and Meyer lemon zest. Easy to approach, yet with plenty of nuances. Great on its own as well as an accompaniment to Dungeness crab.

I had to do a double-take. Single vineyard Aussie Chardonnay for $15!? Aromas of Meyer lemon, vanilla, and toasted sourdough let you know right away that this wine is a far cry from the mass-produced unoaked Chardonnays of the same price range. On the palate, the wine has a lovely lanolin texture and rich fruit, while staying light on its feet and bright from the wonderful acidity. The finish is long, and even has hints of minerals. Unbelievable quality-to-price ratio.

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut. In France's Burgundy, Chardonnay is the source of the prized wines of Chablis, Corton-Charlemagne, Mâcon, Meursault and Montrachet. It also the foundation of exceptional Champagne, where it is blended with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier or vinified on its own into Blanc de Blancs. It is also extremely popular in California, and is gaining popularity in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain and South Africa.


- While it is true that the greatest strides in Australian winemaking have come in the last 30 years or so, commercial viticulture began as early as the 1820s and has developed uninterrupted ever since. The majority of the great wine regions are in the southeastern area of the continent, including Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra in South Australia; Yarra Yarra Valley and Pyrenees in Victoria; and the Upper and Lower Hunter Valleys in New South Wales. Many of the wines from Southeastern Australia are based on Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon and various blends including Grenache and Mourvedre. In Western Australia, along the Margaret River, great strides are being made with Pinot Noir as well as Bordeaux-styled reds. There are also many world-class releases of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from the land Down Under, where Riesling also enjoys international acclaim.
