Smoke Wagon 12 Year Old "Private Barrel #5890" Cask Strength Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)

SKU #1431710

The Nevada H&C Distilling Co., home of Smoke Wagon Bourbon, is one of the early wave craft distillers who nabbed a good contract from the excellent distillery in Lawrenceberg Indiana. 12 years later, these guys are sitting on some really top notch Straigh Bourbon, but no one seems to know anything about them. The distillery is in the heart of down town Las Vegas. They've released a range of excellent bourbons in various price points, but we're only now getting access to the very best juice. The "Private Barrel" program is one of those few hidden gems in the bourbon world. The hype around this brand is almost non-existent, but that doesn't mean their whiskey isn't excellent. There's no filtered shots of their bottles and barrels on their website. There's no marketing budget. There's just good whiskey at competitive prices. Our two barrels we both distilled on May 15th, 2007. These have kind of come out of now where but you know we'll be begging for more. This barrel, despite the lower proof, shows much more spice on the nose than the other. Some hints of cinnamon and roasted vanilla, subtle herbal underbrush layered over burnt sugar and exotic wood. If you like a big spice

I’m surprised this didn’t sell out the moment it hit the shelves. Older MGP juice is becoming harder to come by and finding a single barrel of this quality is even more rare. There’s a lot going on on the nose once you get past the barrel proof heat. I got notes of cherry cola, sweet anise seed, almonds, baking chocolate and baked peaches. This whiskey was right in my wheelhouse in terms of proofing and my palate picked up on some black raspberry accompanied by a lot of herbal notes like liquorice root and sweet parsley. Oak and cacao nibs also made their way in past the sweet herbal notes. The finish was nice but not too long and I felt that peaches and raspberry syrup combined with a mouthwash texture/feel left me feeling refreshed and ready for another dram.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
