2016 Domaine Long-Dépaquit (Bichot) Chablis Grand Cru "La Moutonne"

SKU #1431191 95 points James Suckling

Very energetic, concentrated and powerful flavors of lime and peaches. A wealth of mouthwatering acidity. Superb depth, purity and a long, stony mineral core. Holds long. Try from 2020. (7/2018)

Fuller cloudy medium yellow. Reticent nose hints at lemon, orange and anise, with an element of minerality providing lift. The broadest and richest of these young 2016s but not yet filled in, with yellow fruit and citrus zest flavors complicated by a sexy element of spicy oak. The tangy finish features a touch of youthful bitterness but spreads out nicely on the back end. This more serious grand cru will need time.(ST) (8/2017)

A steely version, with a bracing structure honing the apple, lemon, green plum and mineral flavors. Just a bit tightly wound on the finish at this stage, yet persistent. Drink now through 2025. (12/2018)

90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2016 Chablis Grand Cru la Moutonne has a pleasing bouquet, well defined with flint and smoke scents at first, a touch of honeysuckle and jasmine following just behind. I appreciate the complexity here considering the vintage. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, more cohesive than its fellow grand crus from Long-Depaquit with fine salinity on the finish. Very fine. Drink through 2028. (NM) (12/2017)

The oak influence is restrained if not invisible. The moderately exotic nose displays mineral reduction, seaweed, citrus peel and iodine nuances. There is very fine punch, intensity and detail to the large-scaled flavors that brim with dry extract before terminating in a delicious though once again somewhat one-dimensional finish. This could well be a pleasant surprise if it can develop better depth than I imagine. (10/2018)

K&L Notes

Note: 2.35 ha monopole that spans a parcel of vines situated in both Vaudésir and Preuses though 95% of it is in Vaudésir. The site is protected from the wind and often gives very ripe wines; <25% new wood. 91 points Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Fine full lemon and lime, a classy nose with well-judged ripeness. A reductive note starts to appear. Quite lean on the palate with fair intensity, fleshy and a bit oaky at the back, not quite the same natural balance as my very favourite wines, but this may settle down with more age. DIAM 10 closure. Tasted: May 2019." 95 points Tim Atkin, M.W.: "Not quite up to the exalted levels of the 2014 bottling - one of the greatest young Chablis I’ve ever tasted - but this monopoly Grand Cru white, produced from a combination of 95% Vaudésirs and 5% Preuses, is still an impressive 2016, with peachy, stone fruit flavours, creamy lees and some orange zest. 2019-24."
