2018 Bodegas Puelles Blanco Rioja

SKU #1430936

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Most of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 20 hectares, which are north-facing and located at 600 meters in altitude, affording the visitor with one of the most dramatically beautiful views of Rioja's main mountain ranges: the Sierra Cantabria mountains immediately to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda mountains to the south. This white wine consists of 100% Viura. Bright, clean apple and citrus flavors combine with terrific minerality to make this one of the best values in white wine around.

OK, I accept that we’re in last throes of this crazed, "throw everything at it and see if it sticks" decade, one that frankly I will be overjoyed to bring to a merciful end. And look on the bright side, "2020" is a sign of improved vision, right? One way to welcome the New Year, along with your favorite bubbly, is with a basket of fresh steamed, cracked Dungeness crabs and a few bottles of this crisp, citrus-driven and delicately aromatic white Rioja, made entirely from unoaked Viura (commonly known in other parts of Spain as Macabeo). Well-delineated acidity forms the backbone of this ever-quaffable, always delightful white wine. Enjoy!

Another very tasty offering from Puelles. This light white has a lovely citrus nose with hints of vanilla and fruit. The taste is well balanced with an almost tropical offering and just the right amount of acid. Very easy drinking.

100% Viura. Crisp and clean with notes of green apples, citrus and herbs with good minerality and acid with zero oak influence. A great little wine for $12.99. This is a super refreshing bottle of white Rioja that could be a great replacement for a Sancerre or a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. People often overlook white Rioja but one taste of this and you will realize that is a mistake.
