2009 Ardmore 10 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Refill Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1429986

The underrated Ardmore distillery was built in 1898 right at the height of the late century whisky boom. The owner, Adam Teacher, needed a steady supplier of malt for his expanding Teachers blend and this distillery still supplies the smoky component for that popular blend. The large facility expanded numerous times over the last century to become one of the largest distilleries in the highlands. It's famous for being one of the last distilleries to convert from coal fired stills and is home to a large blending laboratory. The distillery was purchased in 2005 by Jim Beam and has since become part of the Suntory Holdings via their acquisition of the famous bourbon company. We've always loved the unique highland peat character that's typical of Ardmore and while it's not got the cache of its peaty cousins from Islay, it does offer one of the best values for smoke lovers. This gorgeous 10 year old cask shows a restrained sootiness pointed by ripe orchard fruit, sweet malt and tangy spice. On the palate, hints of medicinal herbs and building coal smoke, but with some gentleness nonetheless. This is the perfect whisky for those who want that peaty quality, but don't want the intensity of a Laphroaig. Nothing on Islay delivers the goods quite like this Ardmore does in the price point.

I love highland peat. It offers a great changeup from Islay when you're craving something with smoke. I find Ardmore to have a brighter, hotter smoke quality than most Islay whiskies that really lets the intensity of the malt and the barrel shine through. This 10 year old is both rich and spicy. Snappy ginger plays perfectly with the sweet barley and vanilla and ties together the wood smoke and barrel spices. A slight creosote note lingers over the finish, like a cold chimney before you light a roaring fire. A beautiful whisky for a very sensible price.

I really dig this bottling, but it's definitely a departure from the core lineup of distillery releases (which have changed somewhat over the last decade). There's smoke, but it's subdued (and quite different in character from the whiskies of Islay). It's malty, earthier, woodier smoke. What comes through on the K&L single cask bottling is a load of fruit and medicinality. Apricot and cherry come out of the glass with heady herbs. The palate has green chili pepper, sooty fire ash, peach, and cherry. Spice builds and builds through the palate, and with subsequent sips. Water brings out more barley notes that remind me of the classic Ardmore style, while a little more sweetness and creamy vanilla also emerge.

One of the nice things about this bottling is that it is light bodied and delicate. The nose is subtle with undertones of smoke. In the mouth it is pretty with malt flavors and a hint of savory. The Ardmore 10 has all of the right characteristics to make this an easy and enjoyable drink.
