Father and son team Felipe and Ageo are 3rd and 4th generation to produce excellent mezcal in Miahuatlan. This area is renowned for the abundance of Karwainski (Madrecuixe, bicuixe, tobaxiche) and an unusual additional piece on their copper potstills called the "refrescador". This odd apparatus sits on top of the potstill like a mini water cooled column, though the Cortes do not use plates inside the apparatus. It catches and condenses the heaviest spirits as they form, further rectifying the spirit slightly, but also adding depth. The result are some of the most pure agave driven mezcals in Oaxaca. The Cortes family has been working on this particular palenque for 30 years. They have two underground ovens, one with 5 and the other with 9 tons of capacity. Roasting take between 8-10 days and includes encino, yegareche, mesquite and palo de aguila wood. The Arroqueno is cooled for 5-7 days before milling on an ox drawn tahona. Fermented in open sabino vats for 3-8 days using local well water. After double distillation adjustment is with heads and tails of the second distillation - "Puntas y Colas". Distilled March of 2018 and bottled May 9th, 2018. Only 254 bottles produced. Note that a typo on the label lists the scientific name of this product as A. Karwinskii when it is in fact A. Americana.

Arroqueno may be my favorite species of agave, I hate playing favorites but there it is. I find they strike a balance of all the fun flavors agaves have to offer- fruity, minerally, funky, and green. This one was no different. On the nose I immediately got purple gobstoppers, camembert cheese, watermelon rind, hickory smoked bacon, and sweet pine needles. It got even better on the palate as sweet pine wood hit the tip of my tongue first followed by a briney minerality combined with green plum. Towards the end, I got a mellow jalapeno spice note. The finish was just as great as the experience sipping it as I was left pondering a soft texture, slightly creamy with hints of aloe and a tingling spice.

Each of the Mal Bien green tape mezcals are distinctive and delicious. The Arroqueno jumped from the glass with aromas that were an interesting floral and savory mixture with a kiss of smoke. It was very pleasant. In the mouth, it was soft with savory mineral notes and an interesting ash under tone. Unique and delicious.
