2016 Xavier Vignon "Cuvée Vieilles Vignes" Côtes du Rhône

SKU #1424086 93 points Jeb Dunnuck

A blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre and the rest Cinsault and Syrah, the 2016 Côtes du Rhône Cuvée Vieilles Vignes offers a gorgeous bouquet of cassis, blueberries, lavender, cured meats, and graphite. It's deep, rich, medium to full-bodied, and has a great finish. The Mourvèdre keeps this tight and fresh, and I suspect it will age beautifully. (8/2018)

There's a spicy, green peppercorn edge to the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Vieilles Vignes. It's medium to full-bodied, with svelte, supple tannins and plenty of plummy fruit that exhibits more savory notes and spice on the long finish. (JC) (10/2018)

K&L Notes

Xavier Vignon is a winemaking consultant for a host of top Rhone properties including La Nerthe, Marcoux and Grand Veneur. Often for practical matters, he would take a portion of his payment as grapes. His large range of luxurious cuvees are created using that fruit and he is simply making some of the most delicious and engaging wines in the region. The Cuvee Vieilles Vignes sources remain secret but they are from 100+ year old vines. The wine has a saturated color and full bodied palate that delivers Chateauneuf level quality for Cotes du Rhone pricing.

Xavier Vignon’s reputation as a consummate blender is magnified in this rollicking, robust red, made from organic Grenache, Mourvédre, Cinsault and Syrah, some of which were planted at the beginning of the last century. Fleshy black plums and wild strawberries cavort with spicy aromatics and polished tannins in a wine that lingers on the mind and palate. An extraordinarily well-priced wine from this great producer, and one to imbibe throughout the upcoming holiday season.

I like the 2016 vintage a lot, I liked 2015 as well but 2016 has just a little more focus and verve for my palate, it shows in the nose of this wine while showing lots of fruit aromatics it’s the garrigue that gets me, that’s that earthy, spicy smells like wild brush aromatic. On the palate breadth and balance come to mind immediately a little more of the rich fruit character comes through but balanced with good acidity and accented with that spice and wild brush. If you can buy a case and hang on for 3-4 years you will really see the greatness of this vintage.

Xavier Vignon was a happy addition to our portfolio of Direct Imports last year. His Cuvee Anonyme Chateauneuf is one of the great under the radar wines from his stable of beautifully articulated releases. Another great find is this - Cuvee Vieilles Vignes. All from organically farmed centenary vineyards, this is the culmination of ripeness (2016 is a great vintage!) and terroir. Deep rich confiture of strawberries and blackberries fill the glass making this sexy and wild on the nose. On the palate, it is long finishing with that sweet fruit but adding flavors of Indian spices and garrigue. It is lush and rich but has ample balance making it far more elegant than you would expect from the attack. This is a great harmonious Rhone that will offer years of drinking pleasure.

I was first exposed to Xavier Vignon through his Chateauneuf-du-papes during my time in restaurants. Even then I was amazed by the level of complexity and depth his wines delivered, and this Cotes du Rhone is no exception. The 2016 is incredibly vibrant with notes of fresh strawberries, savory underbrush, and an incredibly complex mineral component that leaves my mouth watering, and wanting more. This wine is begging for a nice home cooked meal to accompany it, and it's coming home with me.

Rhone Blends

Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
Sub-Region:

Rhone

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
