2016 Larkmead Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Elsewhere $125)

SKU #1421757 98 points Wine Enthusiast

This stellar, powerhouse wine is perfumed in aromas of pencil, leather and sage that season a core of mineral and crushed rock. The fruit is equally savory in currant and plum, with a dusting of dark chocolate. Enjoy now–2029. *Editors' Choice* (VB) (11/2019)

Moving to the barrel samples, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is a pretty, elegant wine that lacks the richness of the 2015 yet has perfumed notes of red and black currants, spring flowers, and spice. A blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot that was harvested early in September, it’s going to need short-term cellaring. (12/2017)

94 points James Suckling

Dense and fruity with lovely, layered tannins and lots of blueberries, blackberries and hints of dried flowers. Full body, dusty, gritty tannins and a flavorful finish. Chewy, yet will come around with two or three years of bottle age. (2/2019)

93 points Vinous

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is absolutely gorgeous. Fresh, perfumed and silky, the 2016 captures all of the most elegant qualities of the year. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint, rose petal and spice notes are laced throughout in this subtle, gracious Cabernet Sauvignon. All the elements are simply in the right place. It is so great to see Larkmead's entry-level Cabernet capture all the potential it showed as a young barrel sample. (AG) (12/2018)

A flicker of savory leads off, giving the raspberry, red currant and cherry compote flavors lift and direction. Ends with a bramble hint as the fruit plays out nicely. Shows range, with freshness taking the lead and some depth in reserve. Drink now through 2030. (JM) (10/2019)

Pound for pound one of the very best bottles of classically styled Napa Cabernet around. Larkmead is a property with an esteemed history and yet the wines continue to go from strength to strength with Dan Petroski at the helm. This has everything you could want from Napa Cabernet without any of the excesses that plague many present day contemporaries. This is pure, age worthy, refined Napa Cab at it's finest. The wine is composed from blocks spanning the property's diverse soil types giving a a full picture of the vineyard in a given season. Whilst Larkmead's single block or soil type bottlings offer a step up in power and concentration, I actually love how this Estate bottling is expressing itself and find it every bit as compelling as the significantly more expensive Olomo, Solari and Lark releases. Remarkably fresh aromatics of blue fruits, shaved cedar, cigar box, mint, graphite and loamy earth. Mid-weight, fine but considerable tannins and perfectly judged to frame the elegant, precise fruit. This is very classy stuff that I think really deserves to be discussed among the very best wines being made in modern day Napa Valley...and I write this review just days after tasting many hundreds of wines at Premiere Napa Valley 2020. Buy with confidence, drink this now or over the next 20+ years.

A Napa Valley icon that qualifies itself for that designation year after year, Larkmead's Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is delicious: full stop. Incredibly pretty, with dark black and purple fruit bridging the lavender nose and black pepper finish. A soft herbal note runs parallel to the main palette but in the background, only really asserting itself right before the end. With a grace that belies its power and weight, this bottle wants you to love it, and makes it easy to do so.
