 The Anjou Villages appellation is warm enough to ripen both versions of Cabernet, Franc and Sauvignon. This rich while balanced wine is good proof of that with its ripe black fruits and acidity. It wouldn't be Loire without the smoky, lightly stalky backdrop that will allow the wine to age. Drink from 2020. (RV)  (9/2018)

K&L Notes

Established over 50 years ago, the 4th generation of the Denis family now runs this operation. Julien is the winemaker, Stephane in charge of the viticulture and Vincent oversees the administration and sales. Over the last decades the property has grown from 5 to 80 hectares that stretch across the appellation including some very select parcels in the Coteaux du Layon (home of one of the region's great dessert wines). The Anjou Villages is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Cabernet Franc grown on volcanic soils. This soil imparts a warmth that delivers more richness and fruit in these wines which distinguishes this terroir from other vineyards in the region.

A great value wine with a fantastic taste profile from Loire Valley. It is a blend of Cab Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon . Layers of pomegranate, blackberries and cranberries. Bright and vivid acidity, mild tannin that nicely blends in the body and gives this wonderful wine a great structure.

This fabulous little number is Cabernet Sauvignon dominate (60%) with the remainder Cab Franc. It has all the typical black fruit, pepper, floral and mineral tones -and price point- that make the wines from the Anjou so versatile and pleasurable to drink. The tannins announce their presence but don’t overstay their visit. It has more weight and richness thanks to the Cab Sauv but it still remains a bright Loire Valley red that is an excellent alternative to your typical Bordeaux blend. It’s difficult to taste wines like this on the job because I immediately want to pour myself a glass, sit down, and enjoy a nice, leisurely meal with friends. I know what I'm doing after work tonight.

Anjou is typically more famous for it's delicious Cabernet Francs but this beautiful red is a Cab Sauv dominant blend. In the cooler climate of the Loire, you don't typically see the reds reaching Bordeaux levels of extraction but Petit Clocher's Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Francare are planted on warmer volcanic soils that contribute more richness. This makes for s a gorgeous medium plus bodied expression of these grapes. Lush currants, black cherries and notes of crushed sage, tobacco and bay leaf give a complex overtone that way over-delivers in Cab quality for the humble price of $15. This is my favorite new weeknight red!

This is one of the most exciting red wines I’ve tried from the Loire in quite a while. It’s better than half Cabernet Sauvignon with the rest Cabernet Franc. It’s an unsual blend allowed only in the Anjou-Village appellation. The bold ripe fruit of the Cabernet Sauvignon carries the weight of the wine but ultimately its true character is informed by the Cabernet Franc which rules this area. It’s not really Bordeaux but it’s not exactly your typical central Loire red. It’s that curious aspect that draws me to this wine. Also, it just tastes great. At $15 this is one of the best red wine buys in the store.

Bordeaux move over! This Anjou-Village shows all the dark fruit with rich and supple tannin of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and earthy aromas of Cabernet France (40%). This wine has the all the structure that I'm betting it will open up over the next few years, but best of all, it's showing absolutely great now! Give me a pepper steak and mushrooms and put me to bed.

Cabernet Franc

- While Cabernet Franc, a parent with Sauvignon Blanc to the ubiquitous Cabernet Sauvignon, frequently plays second fiddle in Bordeaux blends (though it does get more props on the Right Bank, where it dominates Cheval Blanc), this lighter, higher acid/lower tannin, early-maturing, perfumed red varietal is far from a wallflower. It is the headliner in the Loire Valley appellations of Saumur-Champigny, Bourgueil, St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Chinon and Anjou-Villages, where it makes exceptional, food-friendly wines. Outside of France, Cabernet Franc can be found in northern Italy, particularly in Friuli and in California where it is frequently used as a blending grape in Bordeaux-style wines. Heartier in the cold than Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc is gaining a foothold in northern and eastern wine regions like Canada, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
