2018 A.A. Badenhorst "Secateurs" Chenin Blanc Swartland

SKU #1412335 94 points Wine & Spirits

Drought conditions followed by a cool harvest season produced a stunning version of Adi Badenhorst’s entry-level Chenin. He took an unusual approach in 2018, harvesting the fruit over the course of 12 days and adding each day’s fruit to the already-fermenting musts. All of it was whole-bunch pressed, and one-quarter was fermented in old casks, the rest in tanks. Left on its lees for seven months with occasional stirring, the final wine is as deep and rich in flavor as its yellow hue predicts: It moves from waxy apple flavors to mango, wildflower honey and tangerine. It feels all of a piece, bright acidity holding the flavors taut and firm, a large-boned Chenin fit for a crown roast of pork. All that for $16. (2/2019)

90 points Vinous

The 2018 Secateurs Chenin Blanc, which Adi described as "the most fun wine to make," comes from 28 different parcels, of which 17 are over 50 years old, on granite soils in the Paardeberg Mountains. It has a well defined bouquet of lemon curd and light white flower aromas. It is slightly viscous on the entry, very pure with fine acidity, and honeyed toward the finish, to the point where it could almost be a dessert wine (I could imagine this pairing wonderfully with a hard cheese ). Given the price point, this is brilliant Chenin Blanc and an outstanding value. (NM) (8/2018)

The Secateurs wines have been on our radar for awhile. These wines have huge quality for the price and the Chenin in particular. But in 2018, they really hit it out of the park. With cool conditions at harvest, winemakers have the room to pick their grapes at absolute peak ripeness without rushing. The result is astounding. On the nose it is floral and spicy: white flowers, citrus and lychee. On the palate, this wine is brimming with the flavors of apricot, with lemon curd, soft tropical notes. A crisp snap of acidity, gives it a refreshing bite that is perfect for warmer weather. This is versatile food wine, and would be absolutely killer on a summer evening with Halibut with fresh herbs.

A great example of a clean, crisp and refreshing white wine without overpowering the palate. The nose has aromas of tropical fruit and subtle hints of citrus zest while the palate is upfront with acid, hint of lime on the mid-palate and finishes with subtle notes of ripe tropical fruit. It's balanced in a way that all of these elements work so well together. At this price and flavor profile, it should certainly become a staple in your white wine selection this summer!

Awesome value Chenin Blanc! Great candied lemon and crushed limestone nose with a viscous, sharp and clean palate that gives some round lemon-lime happiness and a glorious fresh finish.

This wine screams "summer" like a little kid cannon-balling into a pool. I love the strong tropical fruit aromas from this Chenin Blanc that hit right up front. I catch notes of pineapple, guava, and mandarin orange with honeysuckle. The palate brings soft fruits and balances bright lemon acidity with grapefruit pith bitterness. This is a crisp, mouthwatering white wine.

This wine is killer. Rich chalky texture and juicy acidity support the wafting aromas of tangy stonefruit and wild herbs--apricot, kaffir, fennel. While this fresh but structured wine has no overt oak, but has plenty of body and texture on its own. While a wine like this is quite versatile for food pairing, it may be perfect for meaty fish like halibut or cod, roasted or grilled, with garlic and lemon for the tame or mango mint salsa for the adventurous!
