2015 Substance (K Vintners) "Klein Vineyard - BX" Walla Walla Valley Bordeaux Blend (Previously $60)

SKU #1411027 98 points Jeb Dunnuck

the 2015 Klein BX Vineyard Collection checks in as a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc, brought up in a mix of new and used barrels. Deep purple-colored, with a thrilling bouquet of crème de cassis, toasted spice, graphite, and dried tobacco, this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, building yet sweet tannins, flawless balance, and a finish that goes on for over a minute. This is a tour de force in Bordeaux blends from Washington State that I wish every reader could taste. It’s already accessible, with a sexy, flamboyant personality, yet it’s going to keep for two decades given its balance and purity. Drink through 2034. (4/2019)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A blend of about half Cabernet Sauvignon and about a quarter each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Klein Vineyard Bx opens with a bold and intense expression on the nose. The wine is full-bodied and lush on the palate, with an open-knit expression and massive, tangy tannins that land heavily on the palate and weigh it down. This is still tight and will perform better in time, so let it rest in the cellar to give this big boy time to round off its edges. 260 cases produced. (AM) 93+ (12/2019)

I haven't fully explored the wines of the Walla Walla valley, but I can say, trying this single vineyard from Wines of Substance was a total delight, and quite a fantastic first impression of what single vineyard Washington cab can truly be capable of. Chalky tannins and a fantastic full body, this is the first Washington cab I've had that I immediately thought this could rival some of Napa's finest. This wine is definitely worthy of sitting in your cellar for 5-10 years.

Striking a deft balance between exotic, ripe, flamboyant modern Cabernet and gravelly, structured, savory old school Bordeaux. Tasted in a lineup of top notch Cabernet from Napa, this wine stood up very well showing beautiful layers of flavor: cassis, blackcurrant, loganberry, hot stones, pencil shaving, oak spices. Full bodied but not jammy in the least. Well defined, varietal tannins give great structure and length. We took one final parcel of this wine before it's gone for good, and with the huge and well deserved score from Jeb it's gonna move fast. 98 points from under $60!

This is my favorite release from the Wines of Substance lineup. As Bordeaux blends go, this is impressive. It begins with a great spicy nose, gets more earthy, then displays pretty and subtle notes of cranberry and blackberry. The elegant fruit characteristics continue onto the palate, joined by leather and then toasted baking spices. The mouthfeel is satiny, and the wine gently fades into a drying, long finish.
