2018 Diatom "Bar-M" Los Alamos Chardonnay

SKU #1410209 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2018 Chardonnay Bar-M has an open nose of quince, warm hay, green apple and pear, baker’s yeast, acacia and dried chamomile with white peach and nectarine plus hints of lime peel and crushed stone. Light to medium-bodied, it has a wonderful core of spicy fruit and wicked minerality in the mouth, amplified by juicy freshness and a long, energetic, layered finish. Yum! (EB) (9/2019)

93 points Vinous

From a site in Los Alamos, the 2017 Chardonnay Bar M is perfumed, lifted and wonderfully gracious in feel. Citrus and floral notes abound in a very pretty, expressive Chardonnay that shows the aromatic style that is so common here. White flowers, mint and saline overtones add closing layers to this pretty and inviting Chardonnay from Greg Brewer's Diatom label. (AG) (9/2019)

92 points Jeb Dunnuck

From a vintage described as epic from Greg, the 2018 Chardonnay Bar-M comes from a vineyard just off Highway 101 and vines planted in 1996. It offers Chablis-like lemon notes as well as hints of tropical fruits, a medium-bodied, rounded, textured style on the palate, beautiful fruit, and a clean finish. (10/2019)

92 points Wine Enthusiast

From a vineyard in the Los Alamos Valley, this bottling by Greg Brewer begins with fresh aromas of passion fruit, citron, lime leaf and wet cement. The palate is tightly wound with slightly sour tones of guava peel, presenting a very fresh, no-oak style that still has plenty of character. (MK) (7/2019)

This Chardonnay is incredibly fresh! My immediate thought was how well this wine would complement a light spring or summer supper. The wine gives vibrant notes of citrus fruits, green plums, lime leaves, orange blossom, and finishes with a crisp touch of salty minerality. This wine has me longing for the warmer weather to come, and will be the perfect companion for all of your favorite outdoor activities!

The Bar M from Diatom is not only a brilliant chard, but also a steal considering it's the price that it is. If you don't like that typical "California style" then the Bar M may be a wine that will get you to like chardonnay from California. Packed with so many brilliant flavors like several stone fruit, lime, pear, and green apple, I think I just found my new sipper for the upcoming warmer months. Truly a delight!

The most inspired part of Greg Brewer's wine making philosophy is simplicity. His goal is to capture the purity of the fruit without any adornment. It's an approach that embodies traditional wine making with an emphasis on precision and restraint. Greg will reference the finest sushi chefs when he describes his approach to creating wine. The vineyards are planted in ancient marine sediment unique to the western Sta. Rita Hills. The saline quality adds a savoriness to the succulent citrus fruit profile. The Bar-M personifies purity of fruit like few others. This is another example of why Greg is so revered as one of the masters of Chardonnay and the Sta. Rita Hills soils.

Wow! This is an utterly delicious, thirst quenching bottle of wine from Santa Barbara legend, Greg Brewer. Diatom is a range of wines made from some of his favorite single vineyards across the region. The premise of the brand is to craft the wines to be as transparent and terroir driven as possible by eschewing any new oak and trying to keep the wines as focused and pure as possible. This is simply bursting with ripe citrus, yellow stone fruits, quince and intense stony minerality. A wine with lovely texture on the palate and a beautifully judged acid line that leaves a mount-watering zest on the palate. Clearly the work of a master craftsman. I'm very excited to be ale to offer this fantastic bottle at a national low price that is too good to show. This might just be your new house favorite...my fridge is already stocked!
