2016 Hill Family Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $50)

SKU #1408710 93 points James Suckling

A beautiful nose of vivid blackcurrants, blackberry bush, licorice, tar, bark and dried elderberries. Full-bodied and very intense yet restrained and vibrant at the same time. The tannins are chewy and polished. (5/2019)

91 points Jeb Dunnuck

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon offers more black cherries, chocolate, pine forest and cedarwood notes as well as medium to full-bodied richness. It’s another charming, impeccably made wine from this team that should drink nicely for 10-15 years. (1/2019)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is blended of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller portions of Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah. Deep garnet-purple colored, it gives up notes of kirsch, blackberry compote and plum preserves with wafts of crushed black currants, bay leaves and mossy bark. Full-bodied and densely packed with ripe, rich black fruits in the mouth, it has a firm, grainy frame and long, lively finish. 996 cases produced. Drink through 2030. (LPB) (2/2019)

K&L Notes

After four decades of farming grapes for some of Napa Valley's finest wine producers, fourth-generation farmer Doug and his family decided they should enter the wine business. Hill Family Estate was born out of the desire for the family to work together - sharing the experience of crafting fine wines that showcases the grapes that Doug farmed and then introducing those wines to the consumer. Winery note: "Our 2015 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is carefully blended to give power and balance. To assure continuity, we use the vineyards Doug Hill controls and manages. The Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot elevate the nose and display the fruit and oak spice. Wines from 2015 were big and intense because of continued low rainfall, small crops, and early bloom and veraison, but growers were lucky because reasonable temperatures (for the most part) and almost no fall rain still allowed for nice hang time and maturity. This wine was bottled unfiltered, so natural sediment will appear on the cork and in the wine. Decanting is highly recommended."
