2018 Bourgneuf, Pomerol (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1407915 92-94 points Jeb Dunnuck

The 2018 Château Bourgneuf is, as always, a richer, powerful Pomerol from the Moueix team. Made from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from gravelly, iron-rich soils (there's some clay as well), its deep purple color is followed by lots of cassis, spicy oak, graphite, and earthy minerality. Rich, medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins and a terrific mid-palate, it's a brilliant Pomerol in the making. Tasted twice. 92-94+ (5/2019)

92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Bourgneuf has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and leaps from the glass with vibrant kirsch, blackberry pie and crushed plums notions followed by hints of chargrilled meats, fertile loam, truffles and black pepper. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has an intense core of black fruits and savory layers, framed by rounded tannins and loads of freshness, finishing on a meaty note. (LPB) (2/2019)

90-92 points Vinous

The 2018 Bourgneuf has a very satisfying bouquet with neatly defined blackberry, raspberry and strawberry fruit laced with black truffle and light sous-bois aromas. The use of new oak is very prudent here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh and focused with a lively, quite tensile and linear finish. Allow it three to five years just to settle in bottle. (NM) (11/2019)

I really like this wine in 2018. It is not as rustic as in recent past vintages. Menthol, mint aromas. Dense wine. Plenty of spicy, minty flavors. Almost new wve, but finely balanced. Sweet on the palate. Lovely.
Drink from 2025 to 2035

Very pretty aromas; soft, silky middle fruit, ripe tannins, hints of mint and sweet herbs. 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc

Additional Information:

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
