2017 Domaine de l'Ermitage "Victor" Costières de Nîmes Rouge

SKU #1401142

Costières de Nîmes is at the southernmost part of the Rhône Valley sitting on the opposite bank of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. One of our best new finds is Domaine de l'Ermitage which produces three terrific values with eminent drinkability. The estate's history traces back to the 12th century when the winery produced wine for the pilgrims of Saint Jacques de Compostelle who were traveling the Santiago de Compostela. The property is now owned by the Castillon family, and today Michel and his son Jerome manage the vineyards and winemaking. The "Victor" is named for the first member of the Castillon family to own the property. The Rouge is a blend of Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache Noir. The terroir consists of large pebbles from the Durance river, which long predates the Rhône. Average age of the vines is 25 years old, and the vineyard is about 20.5 hectares. The wine is aged in concrete vats for 6-9 months. This is a terrific barbecue red with plenty of ripe black fruit, peppery spice and pipe tobacco. The winery is certified Terra Vitis (sustainable).

Crunchy, fresh red and black fruit and herbed accents give this quaffable, spicy/peppery southern French bistro red instant appeal with a wide variety of casual fare. Seeing only concrete (no oak), the wine maintains its charmingly rustic immediacy and character. From barbecue to steak-au-poivre to cassoulet to pizza to sipping in the park, this is a brilliant everyday red under $10. An obvious case buy.
