 The focus at this predominantly organic domaine is increasingly on older wood and larger foudres rather than new oak. This is subtle, juicy and aromatic, with nectarine and grapefruit flavours and a leesy mid-palate. (TA)  (7/2018)

 The color is already somewhat golden though the honeysuckle and white peach-suffused nose remains quite fresh if somewhat exotic and without much in the way of obvious Chablis character. The seductive and ultra-rich flavors coat the mouth with sap though despite the concentration there is still reasonably good verve to the slightly warm finale. This overtly lush effort is certainly delicious but it's not what I personally search for in fine Chablis.  (10/2018)

 The 2016 Chablis 1er Cru Vaulorent is one of the highlights of the Brocard range, unfurling in the glass with aromas of honeyed peaches and yellow orchard fruit. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and glossy, with an attractive sense of completeness and a saline finish. It's already drinking well. With substantial holdings of some 140 hectares, many of them cultivated organically, Jean-Marc Brocard's Préhy-based estate is one of Chablis's largest producers. It's an estate in motion, with increasingly environmentally responsible viticulture and Stockinger foudres complemented by stainless steel and barrels in the cellar. As is generally the case, the 2017 vintage marks a step up over 2016, and I look forward to revisiting these wines once they've completed their élevage to gain a more definite sense of where Brocard's wines are today and where they are headed. - It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut. In France's Burgundy, Chardonnay is the source of the prized wines of Chablis, Corton-Charlemagne, M√Ęcon, Meursault and Montrachet. It also the foundation of exceptional Champagne, where it is blended with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier or vinified on its own into Blanc de Blancs. It is also extremely popular in California, and is gaining popularity in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain and South Africa.

- The region north of the Cote d'Or, famous for its steely dry white wines made from Chardonnay. There are 7 Grands Crus vineyards, and numerous Premier Crus. Unfortunately, the name has been borrowed and badly abused by producers of inferior white wines in the US as well as in Australia. True French Chablis is a delicate, stony, crisp Chardonnay, bearing no resemblance to the anonymous plonk so labeled here.
