2015 Domaine Baud Chardonnay l'Etoile Blanc (Previously $20)

The Baud family's history in the Jura dates back to 1742, and the ninth generation currently manages 24 hectares of vineyards. The l'Etoile Blanc is 100% Chardonnay and the vineyard has been certified as sustainable with Terra Vitis since 2014. Fermentation takes place in tank followed by about 20 months of barrel aging. The winery describes the wine has having a light yellow and green color with aromas of nuts and a full texture accompanied by an "astonishing long lasting taste."

Creamy and nutty with just a hint of sherry notes to round out the broad, rich and stony flavors and aromas. This is deep, burnished and complex.

This is a great reminder for why I absolutely love the white wines of the Jura. It has a unique Chardonnay profile that reflects the completely un-Burgundian method in which it was made— aged in large neutral oak foudres using a semi-oxidative method. On the nose, you get yeasty-toasty notes alongside cream and citrus with just a hint of smoke lingering in the background. On the palate, it has rich flavors and texture, yet an overall feeling of focus and balance from the great acidity typical of wines made in the cool mountain climate. You gotta love the completely un-Burgundian price on it as well!

A more classic version of chardonnay from the region with cidery and curry spice tones. The finish feels a little more like an aged Burgundy but with more exotic spice notes. This could not be more perfect with braised chicken finished with mushrooms (morels if you can get them) and a little cream (or creme fraiche!).

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut. In France's Burgundy, Chardonnay is the source of the prized wines of Chablis, Corton-Charlemagne, Mâcon, Meursault and Montrachet.
