 The 2016 Old Vines White was fermented and aged in French oak, 10% in a new foudre. It has a generous, rich bouquet that does not stint on dried honey, beeswax and subtle wet wool aromas. The palate is well balanced with a very fine line of acidity, a waxy texture, notes of pear, peach skin and orange pith, and veins of ginger toward a harmonious finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. There is a lot of density and opulence here, yet it manages to maintain control and avoid blowsiness. Just a wonderful white from Chris and Andrea. (NM)  (8/2018)

K&L Notes

This is a blend of 62% Chenin Blanc, 15% Grenache Blanc, 11% Viognier, 8% Clairette Blanche, and 4% Semillon Gris. It's from seven sustainably farmed vineyard parcels in different parts of the Swartland: one parcel of 38 year-old Chenin and a parcel of 8 year old Grenache Blanc on the stony Schist based soils of the Kasteelberg; two parcels of 40-65 year-old dry land bush vine Chenin, one parcel of 41 year old Clairette Blanche and a 57 year old heritage Semillon Gris vineyard grown on the decomposed Granite of the Paardeberg; and a parcel of 18 year-old Viognier on the iron-rich soils of the rolling hills west of Malmesbury. Barrel fermentation and malolactic are completed with indigenous yeasts, then aged for 11 months in 3rd and 4th fill French oak barrels and one new foudre. This wine has a nose of ripe, green citrus fruit and floral elements. The palate is fairly full and richly textured with mineral notes. The finish is fresh and pithy. 94 points from Tim Atkin: "Texture is very important for us" says Chris Mullineux of this brilliant blend of mostly Chenin Blanc with Clairette, Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Sauvignon Gris and Semillon. - Now that it has adopted a multi-racial attitude, and now that the world has embraced its government and its exports, South Africa has become a major wine producer. Unfortunately, South Africa has had a difficult time joining the ranks of competitive winemaking countries. During the anti-apartheid sanctions in the 1980s, South African wine was dealt the huge blow when it was removed from the international market, and for political reasons it was quite difficult for wine producers to market wine to the black majority. Things are finally looking up for the wine industry here, and quality has never been higher. South Africa produces a grape cloned from Pinot Noir and Cinsault, called Pinotage, which is the country's unique varietal. Chenin Blanc (known as Steen) makes up one-third of its vines. Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz are becoming increasingly popular as are Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
