Faustino Gonzáles Cruz Vieja Viña Roble Palo Cortado Jerez

SKU #1211477 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The NV Palo Cortado en Rama Cruz Vieja started its life with one year of biological aging under yeasts and then aged oxidatively in topped up barrels. It has a creamy note intermixed with the classical hazelnuts and a touch of caramel. The palate is certainly closer to an Amontillado than an Oloroso, with certain sharpness. I'm impressed. 1,000 bottles were filled in October 2014. (LG) (4/2016)

Nervy in feel, with a streak of bitter almond lending spine while notes of toasted hazelnut, salted caramel and green tea fill in. Offers a tightly coiled finish. Drink now. (JM) (8/2016)

K&L Notes

We are thrilled to introduce you to the newest winery in Jerez, Bodegas Faustino Gonzalez, who just began commercializing and bottling wine from their very old solera in 2014. Formerly an almacenista and supplier to Domecq, Faustino Gonzalez first started ageing wine in soleras in the late 18th century. They source fruit from their own vineyard, located in the Pago de Montealegre, and also choose to ferment their musts in old American oak instead of the more common stainless steel. The Palo Cortado is aged one year under flor and then an additional 10 years oxidatively. It is a brisk, tangy, lighter style of Palo Cortado, with aromas of dried citrus, caramel, and orange candies, and still a whiff of sea salt. Nutty and dry on the palate, with less salt and pungency than their Amontillado. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)
