2010 Tablas Creek "Esprit de Beaucastel Panoplie" Paso Robles Rhône Blend

SKU #1209665 94-96 points Jeb Dunnuck

More rich and full, with additional roasted herb, licorice, and meaty aromas, the 2010 Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastel Panoplie is a big, dense 2010 that has loads of fruit, yet still shows the vintage with a cool purity of fruit, integrated acidity, and firm tannin that frames the finish. A blend of 60% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 10% Syrah that’s aged all in foudre, this full-bodied, powerful effort will require even more bottle time than the Esprit de Beaucastel, yet will have two decades or more of longevity. Showing slightly more focus and structure than the straight Esprit de Beaucastel, the 2010 Esprit de Beaucastel Panoplie offers up a thrillingly rich and polished profile of blackberry, licorice, roasted herbs, spice box and assorted cured meat-like qualities on the nose. This is followed by a full-bodied wine that has layers of fruit and texture, building richness and a blockbuster finish where the quality of the wine really shows. While approachable now due to its fruit and texture, it should ideally be given 3-4 years of bottle age. It will drink well through 2030. (JD) (8/2013)

Vivid red. Sexy, highly perfumed bouquet of black raspberry, potpourri, star anise and incense. Offers deeply pitched but lively red and dark berry preserve flavors, with notes of candied flowers and spicecake adding complexity. The floral element builds with air and and carries through the long, sappy, alluringly sweet finish. I have little doubt that this wine will age gracefully but it's delicious right now. Country:

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
Sub-Region:

California

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
Specific Appellation:

Paso Robles

- Located about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, this inland AVA enjoys a sunny and hot growing period while its seaside neighbors hang in the fog. Zinfandel is the traditional red grape of choice, though cabernet, chardonnay, and Rhône varietals are gaining favor. Most are made in a fruit-forward, early drinking style.
