 Consistently one of the top, under-the-radar wines of Pessac-Leognan, Haut-Bergey's beautiful 2006 boasts a deep ruby/purple hue as well as a classic bouquet of hot rocks intermixed with graphite, cassis, incense, and charcoal. Medium to full-bodied with noticeable but sweet tannin, impressive purity, and an alluring texture, it is relatively evolved for a 2006, so consumption over the next 15 years is recommended.  Bright, deep ruby-red. Wild, musky aromas of plum, dark cherry, truffle and game, lifted by menthol and licorice. Supple and sweet, offering pure, nicely delineated red fruit flavors and considerable early appeal. A lively, firm midweight, finishing with solid, dusty tannins and very good lift and length. Tasted next to the Branon, also from the Garcin family and consulting winemaker Alain Raynaud, this was less exotic and lush but perhaps more classic and vibrant. (ST)  (6/2009)

We have been very lucky to receive "older" bottlings of Haut-Bergey from the estate. Though Pessac reds generally have gravel and earth notes, which this one does, the 2006 vintage of the Haut-Bergey balances that with soft tannins, black cherry and black currant fruits. At once, smooth and silky but, with a lingering finish of minerals and just a tiny bit of chalk. Delish!

This wine must be one of our best bargain at the store right now. If not THE best one! Perfectly aged, and ready to be enjoyed, but far, far from being over its peak. The sweet fruit on the palate is the icing on the cake of a wine layered with exquisite classic aged Claret notes. Aromatic cedar, leather and smoke, olives and earth. This bottle would transform the most mundane of meals in a feast fit for a king. I really liked this one.

Recently, I was wandering aimlessly up and down our store aisles, needing inspiration for my grilled rib eye dinner. I asked Jacques, our resident Bordeaux expert, what I should drink. He put this wine in my hands. I'm so glad he did. The fruit is sumptuous, showing plum, dried cherry and black currants. The mouthfeel is luscious, the tannins gentle. Classic notes of coffee, tobacco, cedar, and cassis are present here too. I savored every aroma and flavor and was sad when the decanter was empty. This is a sublime wine that has a lot of life left to give. Drink now with a good decant, or cellar for years to come.

This 10+ year old wine represents fantastic value with its sweet fruit profile, earthy aromas and gravely finish. Big but well rounded flavors of plum, dark currant and cherry are layered against a finish of firm, ripe tannin and mineral. There is a lot going on in this under the radar bottle.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.


- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.


Specific Appellation:


- Graves is the large red and white wine region located to the southeast of the city of Bordeaux along the Garonne River. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the red wines from the area, while the whites are mixtures of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The most important area within the Graves is the village of Pessac-Leognan. Most of the great chateaux, including Haut Brion, a premier cru and the only wine outside of the Medoc to be included in the 1855 Classification, are located in this small appellation. Graves derives its name from the rocky, stony terrain of the region. Many people believe that the stony soil radiates the day's heat at night and thus makes the grapes ripen earlier than the other regions in Bordeaux.
