Bonpas Returns! 96-Point "Croix de Bonpas" - 12/10/2019 - Rhone Valley

Bonpas is back with another blockbuster red. Like the Dame de Bonpas which we offered earlier this year and sold out in quick order, the 2018 Croix de Bonpas is an outstanding Rhône value that warrants a case purchase. Earning a huge 96-point rating from Decanter and priced at only $13.99, it is destined to become an instant bestseller. Made in an open, accessible, and easy-drinking style, it is the perfect candidate for a house red. It’s not often we find a wine this well-composed under $20, but that is the beauty of Bonpas. We are really enjoying the 2018s out of the Rhône as they show excellent balance, poise, and focus—characteristics that are on full display in this tantalizing rendition. If you are looking for a red to carry through the holidays and into the new year, we can’t think of a better candidate.

2018 Bonpas "Croix de Bonpas" Côtes du Rhône-Villages ($13.99)

96 points Decanter: "Liquorice, spice and herbal aromas with a hint of reduction cede to a juicy, concentrated and layered palate with notes of spicy oak and blackberry. Classy, long and focused." (06/2019)

If you loved our first offering from Bonpas, get that credit card out of your wallet and yes, rent that u-haul because the Croix de Bonpas is even better! The wow factor is kicked up several notches to this Grenache/Syrah blend with the addition of Mourvedre and Carignan, which give the wine enticing spiciness and uplifting acidity. This is full-bodied and lusty with gobs of ripe black fruits like slow roasted plums, blackberries, ripe raspberries, and hints of garrigue. The finish is round and smooth and completes with an elegant upswing. I consumed the majority of the bottle in one night. It's just that good.

Very engaging aromas of sage, wild blackberry, and a bright floral note lead to a palate full of juicy red and black fruit, a fine grain texture, graphite, and a touch of vanilla and spice. This is a bit more traditional in the scope of Cotes du Rhône as it shows a great sense of finesse and bright fruit. This is a lot of wine for the price and will find many fans for those looking for an over-performing, everyday red.

I didn't think it was possible but I think I prefer the Croix de Bonpas to the Dame de Bonpas! The nose is absolutely enthralling with notes of raspberry kirsch, Baker's Chocolate, licorice and smoke while the palate is a seamless blend of red and black fruits and spice. The wine has great acidity and balance which allows the way to always be in complete harmony between the fruit, tannin, alcohol and sugar. This is an outstanding Cotes du Rhone and a steal at only $13.99. If you loved the Dame de Bonpas then you'll be absolutely infatuated with the Croix de Bonpas.
