2015 Brunello: First Tranche on a Landmark Campaign - 11/25/2019 - Italy

Praised as a “fairy tale” vintage by James Suckling, the 2015 Brunellos are causing quite a stir. As the early reports suggest, the wines exhibit excellent precision, delineation, and range. Some have even gone so far as to proclaim it a “vintage of a lifetime.” While the jury may be out on this assessment, the brilliance if the 2015s is not in dispute. Those who go long on the 2015s will be rewarded with the very best Tuscany has to offer and years upon years of pure drinking pleasure. As Suckling puts it, 2015 is a vintage “nobody should miss.” With the 2015s just now coming to market, we’ve assembled a few of our top picks from this remarkable year. These are incredible finds from some of the region’s best producers in a vintage that will be talked about for decades to come. The wines will be released early next year and start arriving in the fall, but this is a campaign that will reward early buyers.

2015 La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival) ($34.99)

95 points James Suckling: "The sliced plums and peaches are plentiful here on the nose. Full-bodied and dense with round and rich tannins and a long, long finish. Shows structure and intensity. Serious Brunello. Better after 2022." (10/2019)

2015 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival) ($59.99)

97 points James Suckling: "This understated Brunello delivers dried cherries, cumin, terracotta, rust and bark. The full-bodied palate presents an intricately detailed tapestry of finely interwoven tannins, interspersed with compressed, vibrant cherries and gilded in colorful, gleaming acidity. The finish is vivacious and polished and very long. Drink in 2024." (09/2019)

2015 Poggio Antico "Altero" Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival) ($74.99)

97 points James Suckling: "A beautiful cascade of blue and darker fruit precedes generous, enticing notes of saffron, dried orange rind, cumin, roasted thyme and nutmeg. Balanced and tightly framed on the medium-to full-bodied palate with mouthwatering fruit and crunchy acidity, coloring an ornately woven structure of silky tannins. Very long and velvety on the finish. Everything is where it should be." (09/2019)

2015 San Polino Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival) ($59.99)

95 points James Suckling: "A wonderfully fresh expression of Brunello with orange rind, citrus and red cherries; but theres also an overlay of riper, roasted herbs and incense. Medium to full body, ripe but very structured tannins and a very flavorful palate with lots of dried nutmeg and spice undertones. Everything is where it should be, in balance." (10/2019)

2015 San Polino "Helichrysum" Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival) ($74.99)

97 points James Suckling: "Ripe boysenberries, tar, chestnuts, orange peel, dried cherries and tobacco. Theres a beautiful interplay between the more subtle, citrus notes and darker red fruit, and nothings out of kilt to the ripeness. Lots of powerful tannins take the full-bodied palate by storm, coating the mouth in layers of intense but fragrant red fruit and steamrolling this Brunello to a long, chewy conclusion. This is a contrastive wine, built on the foundation of an intricate, wild tannin backbone, but framed in a vibrant and transparent package." (10/2019)

2015 San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino (Pre-Arrival) ($59.99)

98 points James Suckling: "The transparency of fruit to this wine is so pretty with sliced black cherries and orange peel. Fresh and aromatic. Full body. Tight and polished with ultra-fine tannins and an intense and focused finish. A beauty. Drink after 2022." (10/2019)
