WA98+ Fontalloro 2016: A Tuscan Masterpiece at a Remarkable Price - 11/21/2019 - Italy

2016 is a potentially legendary vintage in Tuscany, and Félsina is one of its brightest stars. 2016 Fontalloro was quickly a best-seller on release with a 98-point mark from James Suckling, but a WA98+ took it to another stratosphere and it sold out in minutes. It is no surprise, considering the score is in line with names like Ornellaia (WA98, $220), Pergole Torte (WA98, $225), and Tignanello (WA97, $125) and it sells for a fraction of the price. Combine this press with the fact that it is one of the truly great reference-point Super Tuscan labels, and we were pretty sure that we wouldn't see another parcel at this kind of pricing again. Suffice to say, we jumped at an opportunity to reload on one of the year's best buys and can't recommend Félsina's 2016 Fontalloro enough. This will be a gem for the cellar for the years to come, and is one of the great over-performing wines you'll find, especially considering the vintage and producer.

2016 Fèlsina "Fontalloro" Toscana (Pre-Arrival) - -9 available ($59.99)

98 points James Suckling: "Amazing aromas of licorice, wet earth, orange peel and lavender. Full body, tight and super compact and polished. Goes on for minutes. Clearly great." (06/2019)

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Fontalloro is the best vintage of this landmark wine that I have tasted thus far. This is a very elegant vintage, with more volume in the mouth and precise notes of tar, licorice, camphor ash, resin and Indian spice. In a race between the highly competitive 2015 and 2016 vintages, I give a slight advantage to this wine. The warmer 2015 vintage shows more richness and exuberant fruit. However, this wine from 2016 offers a more focused and chiseled delivery. I am hopeful that this wine will continue to evolve and sharpen as it ages in the bottle. This is a beautiful wine to put aside in your cellar for ten years or more. (ML) 98+" (05/2019)

96 points Vinous: "The 2016 Fontalloro is bold, hearty and deeply flavored, with all of the Sangiovese wildness that is so typical of Fontalloro. Ripe dark cherry, grilled herbs, smoke, leather, game and incense are some of the many aromas and flavors that open up in a potent, virile Fontalloro loaded with personality and character. In so many ways, 2016 is THE archetype of what Fontalloro is - a Sangiovese that is a bit wild and unruly but also full of charm. (AG)" (08/2019)
