A Winning, 94-Point 2014 White Burgundy from Louis Latour - 11/23/2019 - White Burgundy

We (and countless others) have absolutely been loving the 2014 white Burgundies. The best expressions, like Maison Louis Latour’s Puligny-Montrachet "Sous le Puits,” deliver impeccable clarity, verve, and intensity. With a few years of bottle age, this remarkable Puligny-Montrachet has really come into its own. Offering a classic Puligny profile in a top vintage. It is wonderfully dynamic and expressive, revealing sublime flavors of white and yellow fruit, wet stone, and freshly baked pastries. Maison Louis Latour is crafting some of its best wines to date and this 2014 is no exception. With a 94-point score from James Suckling and a pair of 93 ratings, this consensus is that this is a very special bottle of Burgundy. A youthful wine, this single-site expression will continue to evolve and develop for another ten to fifteen years. Collectors who line their cellars with 2014s like this one will have plenty to keep them happy now and for many years to come.

2014 Maison Louis Latour Puligny-Montrachet "Sous le Puits" ($69.99)

94 points Wine Spectator: "Linear and intense, this focused style offers lime, pastry, spice and stony, chalky flavors. Builds to a long finish, though this is tightly wound and locked up for now. Offers a terrific aftertaste of citrus and stone. (BS)" (11/2016)

93 points James Suckling: "Very fresh and clean with a mineral, dried-apple and pear character. Hints of lemon curd and hot stones. Medium to full body and delicious fruit." (01/2017)

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "The vineyard is high up the slope, giving this wine that has good acidity and crispness. The acidity is light and bright, while the texture is concentrated and mineral. It is going to develop as a fine, ripe wine. (RV)" (10/2016)

There's two things I want to put right out there before I review this wine. First, I'm a sucker for Puligny Montrachet. Everyone has that one bottle of Burgundy that totally changed the way they feel about wine, that makes you obsess over a particular region or style, and that you may spend the rest of your days chasing, hopelessly trying to repeat. That wine, for me, is Puligny Montrachet. Second, and more simply put, I'm a total sucker for 2014 White Burgundy. The cut of acid, the clarity and focus, the beautiful, clear expression of site are all factors in what make this unanimously the best wine burgundy vintage in recent memory. With that said, this wine is awesome. The aromas intermingle light touches of citrus zest, white flowers, touches of honey, and poached pear. In following, this wine drinks spectacularly on the palate. Nimble and full of finesse, this balances rounder fruit tones where honey crisp apple and lemon curd come into full focus while keeping that characteristic Puligny lightning-in-a-bottle electric acidity. There's still freshness here, but the added complexity from bottle condition make it evident that this wine is drinking perfectly right now. This is one of those wines that is perfectly suited to my palate and tastes. This is proper wine.

The 2014 vintage in White Burgundy just keeps on giving, winner after winner after winner. The 2014 Louis Latour Puligny Montrachet "Sous Le Puits" is a perfect example of the excellence of this vintage. The nose is a sexy blend of beeswax, lemon oil and hazelnut while the palate is silky with orchard fruits, citrus, brioche and saline notes. Fantastic energy and drive make this another great drinking 2014.
