A Potential 98-Point Central Coast Red with Best-Ever Acclaim - 11/26/2019 - Syrah (domestic)

With a potential 98-point score and priced under $40, the 2018 Tensley "Colson Canyon Vineyard" Santa Barbara County Syrah is among the best values we’ve seen this year. Here you have a world-class estate producing one of the best Syrahs on the market, for a fraction of the price of its mailing-list-only neighbors. A bold and unrelenting expression, it dazzles with deep, ripe fruit, intoxicating aromatics, and a perfect complement of spice. As big as it is, this 2018 remains very well balanced with excellent verve and tension. We continue to be impressed with all the wines from Tensley, but this one takes things to an entirely new level. $39.95 is ridiculous for a wine of this caliber. Any and every fan of dynamic, fruit-driven reds needs to try this undeniably brilliant expression.

2018 Tensley "Colson Canyon Vineyard" Santa Barbara County Syrah ($39.95)

96-98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The deepest colored Syrah in the lineup, the 2018 Syrah Colson Canyon comes from a great vineyard located in the hills above the town of Los Olivos. Awesome notes of blackberries, toasted spice (there's some new oak in this wine), ground herbs, peppered meat, and earth all flow to a full-bodied, concentrated, deep, layered wine that has plenty of tannins, good acidity, and a huge finish. It's a magical Syrah from Tensely, and my money is on it being the finest to date." (10/2019)

K&L Notes: Winery notes: Established in 1998, the first release of Tensley totaled just 100 cases. Now the production has reached 5,000 cases with Tensley becoming the pride of Santa Barbara wine country. With three years of us controlling farming, this is one of the best vintages from Colson to date. This cool vintage gave the grapes plenty of time to hang on the vine and develop flavor and texture. This year’s Colson delivers the up-front fruit that we expect year after year, along with spicy, meaty, and peppery qualities that beautifully balance it out. This wine has the ability to age 10 plus years, but is also approachable in its youth.

Explosive aromatics of dark berries, flowers, and forest floor charge from the glass. The wine is full-bodied and densely packed but it all rides on a firm structure of ripe tannins and elevating acidity. The wine screams across the palate like a fine-tuned precision race car. Ive been a fan of this bottling for the last several years and this is their best offering yet. We managed to lock up a healthy parcel of this wine in order to get it out to you during the holidays. This is a perfect holiday/winter wine that you should not miss out on. And if you forget a few bottles in the cellar for several yearsall the better. This is a best-of-show award winning Santa Barbara Syrah. Bravo to Joey Tensley and team!
