A Sensational Back-Vintage Bordeaux Collectible: 2000 Clos du Marquis - 12/03/2019 - Red Bordeaux

Hailing from the much-lauded 2000 vintage, this perfectly aged bottling from Clos du Marquis is a super-smart buy for those seeking an affordably priced, aged Bordeaux. Rated 94 points and produced by the same team that crafts Léoville-Las Cases, it boasts an excellent pedigree and high acclaim. With nineteen years under its belt, it has blossomed into an utterly diving expression. Robert Parker was so taken by this 2000 rendition, he wrote “One of the great sleepers of the vintage and probably the best Clos du Marquis I have ever tasted, this wine could easily compete with many of the vintage's classified growths. This is remarkable for a wine that doesn’t break the $100 mark. This is an excellent candidate to enjoy now with a special holiday meal or cellar away for another ten to fifteen years. Back-vintage gems like this are increasingly harder to come by, so don’t miss out on this terrific opportunity on a classic, old-school Bordeaux.

2000 Clos du Marquis, St-Julien ($99.99)

94 points Wine Spectator: "The nose shows loads of plum, spice and meat aromas, as well as hints of licorice. It's full-bodied, with firm, yet velvety textured tannins. It's big and rounded. If you can't afford Las Cases, try some of this. Some might call this a second wine, but it comes from a plot of vineyards not deemed worthy of Léoville Las Cases. So it's like its own estate. *Smart Buy, Top 100 Wines of 2003* (JS)" (03/2003)

91 points James Suckling: "This is very open with plum and sweet tobacco notes, and a round and juicy body. Really just starting to open up." (06/2011)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the great sleepers of the vintage and probably the best Clos de Marquis I have ever tasted, this wine could easily compete with many of the vintage's classified growths. (RP)" (04/2003)

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good full medium ruby. Superripe, exotic aromas of roasted currant, smoked meat and cocoa powder. Sweet, lush and silky, with compelling depth of texture and an intriguing gamey note. Very long finish features lush tannins. (ST)" (06/2003)

K&L Notes: 92 points, Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "Tasted at Robertson’s Las-Cases vertical. The 2000 displays good intensity on the nose: blackcurrant, pomegranate, a touch of raspberry and vanilla. At present, this is more generous than the 2005, although not quite the same definition and breeding. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannins on the entry, graphite and a touch of tar interlacing the dark fruits. This is very masculine and punchy at the moment, although doubtless it will mellow with another 3-4 years ageing." (7/2011)

This was my holiday treat this year! What a treat it was. 2000 Clos Du Marquis, I feel, is drinking beautifully right now. Rustic, earthy with a nice balance of fruit to round it out. Big splash of cedar, cassis and cherry. This is very well integrated but still has some big grip and tannin. I would highly recommend a lamb roast be brought to the table.

To this day some consumers still think of Clos du Marquis as the second wine of the prestigious Léoville Las Cases. It is not. It is made from grapes that come from this specific Clos within the estate of Léoville Las Cases, but with a different terroir. It is what we like to call, old-school, which means lots of spices, pronounced tannins, and a lovely touch of meaty leather. I would suggest decanting this old classic 2000 wine for a couple of hours at least.

OK-so it is not the second wine of Las Cases, but a separate clos on the property. This wine is vibrant, lively, sweet, and full-bodied. Perfect with your steak tonight.
