94 Points, $19.99: An Off-the-Beaten-Path White with Excellent Press - 11/16/2019 - Argentina

While a blend of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Torrontes may not be the most conventional combination of grapes, it is unquestionably delicious. The 94-point 2017 Susana Balbo "Brioso" has everything looks for in a light and refreshing white and is one of the sharper bargains we’ve tasted this year. Crafted by Susana Balbo, one of South America’s most talented and respected winemakers, it’s just as irresistible as we’ve come to expect from this capital estate. Clean, bright fruit is perfectly accented by fresh herbs and a hint of salinity. It’s open and giving approach are all hallmarks of any crowd-pleasing white. We love sipping this 2017 on its own, but also recognized that’s is a natural when paired with a wide array of foods. Given this versatility, it’s an excellent pick for Thanksgiving, while also being a great candidate for a go-to house white. We strongly urge you to expand your horizons with this Uco Valley stunner.

2017 Susana Balbo "Brioso" Uco Valley White Blend ($19.99)

94 points James Suckling: "Lots of citrus peel and sage, but also something flinty. Great freshness is married to discreet creaminess on the palate in a really exciting wa. Then the minerals kick in at the long, racy finish. A blend of semillon, sauvignon blanc and torrontes fermented and matured in French oak. Drink now." (04/2018)

92 points Vinous: "(for this blend Balbo uses the same Torrontés fruit that goes into the Signature Barrel Fermented Torrontés but ages it in second-use barrels; the Sémillon is done in concrete eggs and the Sauvignon Blanc in second-use barrels): Very pale color. Aromas of musky grapefruit pith and fresh herbs. Offers lovely texture and intensity, showing strong citrussy grapefruit and herb flavors complicated by intriguing salinity. Not a particularly fruity style but boasts excellent citric tension and finishes with terrific salty grip and excellent length. The Signature Torrontés is easier to drink while this cooler style is more powerful and cutting and needs to be served with food. This Sémillon, incidentally, boasts uncanny intensity, but Balbo notes that it's difficult to sell pure Sémillon. This is actually the white version of Balbo's Brioso red blend, but the word Brioso does not appear on the label in the domestic market. (92+ ST)" (07/2018)

This wine thrills the senses and it amazes me how reasonably priced it is. It should not be a surprise being that the great Susana Balbo makes this wine. It is aromatic but it is not perfumed. It has great fruit, enticing texture, refreshing acidity, and a little mineral tang. The wine is familiar and unusual. It also has a presence, but most importantly it just smells and tastes like great wine. It is an unusual blend of Torrontes, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc and no effort nor expense was spared in making this wine. The Torrontes and Sauvignon Blanc were aged in oak, a good portion of which is new, the Semillon is aged in concrete, there is both a classical and a modern twist to the winemaking here. The wine presents the best sides of all of those varietals and none of their challenging features. This is the rare white wine that can unite and delight all white wine drinkers. This is an aperitif and a dinner wine. The range of flavors with the mouthfeel and texture make this an ideal holiday white.

This wine has one of them the most compelling and interesting aroma profiles Ive come across in a long time. There is an aspect of candied grapefruit peel and toasted honey crisp apple, and I swear, a lemon shaved ice. If my descriptor are a little uncommon, its because the wine itself is exceptional. Linear, svelte, incredibly bright and intensely refreshing. This has everything I like about torrontes, and nothing I dont. This is a delightful surprise in every way.

An incredibly unique white, this is one of the coolest wines I've tasted in a long time. Rich, spiced, but still clean and zippy. Wild but still refined, this is an incredible expression of the Uco Valley using three grapes with successful histories there. The Torrontes and Sauvingon blanc leap out of the glass; braced against each other with floral and grass and tons of citrus notes, each trying to out do the other. On the palate the Sémillon bridges those wonderful notes beautifully, providing width and a long frame to push into the exotic, spiced, almost ginger finish. This is a ridiculously exciting wine that will be unworldly with a holiday meal, or just a cheese board. Don't miss.
