1978 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (very high to high shoulder, bin soiled labels, nicked capsules)

94 points Wine Spectator: "Beautiful deep-garnet color, with classic Médoc flavors of plum, spice, earth and mineral. Tannic, well-balanced, mouth-filling, chewy in its intensity but needs time. Drinkable now, but probably better to wait until about 1998.--Lafite Rothschild vertical." (11/1991) Jancis Robinson: "Very aromatic and lively and fresh. Quite light. 'Rather an old-fashioned wine, slightly 19th century. The only advantage it had was its acidity. It offers no resistance in any way to being drunk.' Baron Eric de Rothschild. 17/20 points. (JR)" ...

1978 Latour, Pauillac (Stained label, Lightly Scuffed, Some Slightly Depressed Corks)

92 points Wine Spectator: "Better than I anticipated. A sleek and racy wine. Ruby-amber color. Aromas of cedar, cigar box, tobacco, mint and mushrooms, with hints of red fruits, follow though to a medium body with fine tannins and a long, silky finish. Excellent now, but a little more bottle age would only improve it. Latour vertical. Best after 2005. (JS)" (08/2000) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Medium garnet-colored with moderate amber at the edge, the 1978 Latour offers a spicy, saddle leather, tobacco, dried herb, earthy nose with sweet ...

1978 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien (OWC)
Bid on this 12-bottle lot of 1978 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien (OWC - 90RP) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1978 Las Cases has taken on a garnet hue with some dark ruby tints. The nose is more complex and penetrating than the flavors. The wine offers classic, mineral, lead pencil, smoky, earthy scents, with plenty of ripe fruit, and none of the vegetal herbaceousness that many 1978s have begun to exhibit. The attack offers good ripeness, medium to full body, higher acidity than many more recent vintages, and considerable tannin in the hard finish. Although this wine possesses outstanding complexity, the high tannin level may never fully melt away. (RP)" (10/1995)

1978 Petrus, Pomerol
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Petrus, Pomerol (92JG). John Gilman: "The 1978 Château Lafleur-Pétrus is one of the finest Right Bank wines I have tasted from this vintage. The wine offers up a lovely and complex nose of cherries, nutskin, a beautiful base of soil tones, pomegranate, a touch of soy, fresh herb tones and a fine topnote of smokiness. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very nicely balanced, with plenty of depth at the core, gentle tannins, tangy acids and excellent focus and grip on the long and complex finish. There is absolutely no sense here of imperfect ripeness and the wine is a very fine, svelte middleweight in its plateau of peak drinkability." (05/2016)

1978 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1978 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (93RP, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This has a very expressive nose, a touch of greenness but ebullient black fruits, tar, graphite and cedar all with very fine definition. The palate is medium-bodied, quite sweet and silky on the entry with good acidity, notes of black cherries, iodine and an almost sorbet like character towards the finish that shows a surprising amount of glycerine. This is certainly a great success for the vintage, kudos to the late-Michel Delon for fashioning such great wines in modest growing seasons. Drink now-2025. (NM-Wine Journal)" (09/2009)

1978 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1978 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien (90JG, 90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An outstanding 1978, Ducru-Beaucaillou's effort displays a fragrant, well-developed bouquet of licorice, earth, black currants, and underbrush. Rich for a 1978, with none of the vegetal character now found in many wines of this vintage, this fully mature, medium-bodied wine exhibits soft tannin, excellent concentration and purity, and a sweet, elegant finish.
