From NETA: Ranulfo has been distilling agave spirits consistently for over four decades, working principally with the same three varieties of maguey: Madrecuixe, Bicuixe, and Espadín. Though the maestro will often distill single-agave productions, he usually combines different varietals to produce an ensamble, like the one we’re excited to share with you this spring. The different agave are roasted, macerated, fermented, and distilled together — true ensambles are never composed of cold blends of finished spirits. Producing an ensamble is one of the olde...

Rezpiral Spirits distilled from agave (uncertified mezcal) is one of the most ambitious agave spirits projects available in the United States. Miniscule batches from all over Mexico that are treated with the utmost respect are imported into select markets. At the heart of the endeavor is an ethos that respects and supports the multi-generational knowledge, independence, flavors, lands, and traditions of each mezcalero family. The Tepeztate is made by Apolonio Ramirez and Reina Sanchez in San Agustin Amatengo. The ancient agaves are grown for 20-25 years....

Real Minero is widely considered one of the finest mezcal producers. The Mendoza family has farmed Agave for decades but they've been distilling since the '70s and become one of Mexico's most sought after producers. Using clay pot stills, they produce one of the cleanest and highest quality products around, but only about 300 liters per month so stocks are tight. It's certified organic, Oaxacan owned and absolutely delicious. Father, Lorenzo Angeles Mendoza, is the brawn, while Graciela Angeles Carreño the heart and soul (and of course the brains) of the...

Wine Enthusiast: "Another single-village mezcal from Del Maguey. This crystal-clear mezcal has not much aroma, just a spicy scent which later opens up to a faint, grassy sweetness. Vegetal, grassy, slightly sweet flavors finish dry and pleasant, with just a little spice. Light body, unctuous feel. (KN)" (12/2010) K&L Notes: Named "Distiller of the Year" at the 2011 San Francisco World Spirits Competition! This single village Mezcal is from the village of Santo Domingo Albarradas, located in the high altitude tropical region of "Mixe" (pronounced Mee-Ha...

From Mezcal Reviews: "Legendario Domingo is made with agave Espadin. It has mature citrus aromas that mix nicely with the presence of sweet cooked agave. Those aromas are met with a fruity flavor derived from the tropical fruits of the region, which slowly soak into the agave as they age 8-10 years before maturity."

La Neta is legit. Literally, it is Mexican slang for "off the hook" or "absolutely great." And this mezcal is aptly named. This delicious and tiny batch of mezcal from Reina Sanchez is fiery and fun as the fiesty Mezcalero who made it. Reina Sanchez is known for her quick wit and biting humor, as much as she's known for her powerfully complex mezcals. Not only does the fact that she is one of just a few women who own and operate a palenque in the region set her apart from her many compatriots but the quality of the spirits she produces does as well. Here she's taking Tequila back to its roots, using Blue Weber grown locally and processing it just as she would any of her othe...

This producer and his sons make a very special mezcal called Pechuga that is many a bartender's darling due to its distinctively smoky-spicy aromas and flavors. Spirits critics have described it as "ouzo-like" for its intense petrol and anise-driven profile. It is triple-distilled and limited in production due to the special seasonal ingredients it requires—wild mountain apples and plums—which are part of a special combination of fruits and rice added to the distillate for the third distillation, which takes place over the period of 24 hours and requires...

Clay pot-distilled mezcal from Eduardo Ángeles, who started Lalocura in 2014 after distilling at his family's Real Minero, that has already attracted a cult following. According to the producer: "Lalocura is produced in Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca, where Maestro Eduardo Ángeles was born and raised, where he learned to distill from his father, and where his palenque is located today. Like all traditional mezcales made in Minas, the agave piñas are roasted in an earthen oven, mashed by hand, fermented outdoors, and distilled in clay pots. It's a process t...

Judah Kuper stumbled into a love of mezcal while traveling through Oaxaca and a visit to a local hospital led to him falling in love with a nurse whose father happened to be a traditional mezcal producer. This Ensamble is produced by Kuper's father-in-law and is similar to a 2016 special release available only in the SF Bay Area that earned the nickname the "Curry 30" in honor of NBA all star Steph Curry who is a mezcal fan. From Mezcal Reviews: "Rey Campero Sierra Negra is a newer release from Casa Sanchez. Due to the extreme limited availability of the agave Sierra Negra, this mezcal was originally only available in Mexico, but a batch first came into the US in 2018. The agave Sierra Negra takes about 25 years to mature and it is no longer commonly used in mezcal due to over harvesting and a general lack of availability."

The name "1938" is meant to honor and remember the sacrifices and hardships that Mexico underwent after it moved to nationalize its oil industry during the Depression. Notes from the producer: "Mezcal Nacional 1938 is an ensamble produced from wild agave cirial and cultivated agave espadín. Ensambles require extra care as they are produced by combining an optimum ratio of cirial and espadín piñas prior to cooking, crushing, fermentation, and distillation. The maestro meszcalero must carefully pre-determine the optimum ratio of agave varieties to yield th...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "A classic unaged mezcal: clear, with fresh, grassy aromas of green chile pepper and a slight whiff of smoke. The flavors reflect sweet and fruity, then spicy and smoky, finishing with spicy anise and alcohol burn. A fine base for a citrusy cocktail." It all began at John Rexer's Bohemian artist refuge, Café No Se, in Antigua, Guatemala. Opened in 2003, Café No Se became the heart of a thriving expat and artisan community of Antigua. As John's business grew, his interest in Mezcal led him to "import" the mystical spirit in very "creative" ways. His customers took to the spirit and to satisfy the growing demand, he was forced to access less seemly trade routes, hence the name Illegal. Needless to say John has gone legit, but his nose for quality has not changed. I often don't care for oak aged mezc...
