Father and son team Victor and Emmanuel are 3rd and 4th generation to distill in Mengoli de Moreals. Their palenque was set up 20 years ago and before that they worked at their grandfather's, Pablo Ramos Sanchez. This area, Miahuatlan, is renowned for the abundance of Karwainski (Madrecuixe, bicuixe, tobaxiche) and the use of an unusual additional apparatus on their copper potstills called the "refrescador". The refrescador sits on top of the potstill like a mini water cooled column. It catches and condenses the heaviest spirits as form further rectifyi...

Don Julio's next installment in their limited Double Cask Reposado line utilizes Diageo's most famous smoky scotch producer - Lagavulin. Enrique Fonseca distilled this expression in early Spring 2010, with three-quarters of the bottling made in a double-copper column still with removed plates to achieve a lower distillation proof and the remaining quarter made in an alembic pot still. Half of the run was then stored in American white oak previously used to age California red wine, and the remaining half barreled in used dark French oak. The casks were then stored for seven years at 3,800 feet elevation in a cool-climate subterranean barrel room.

This unusual experimental expression of the traditional Oaxacan Pechuga comes from Mezcalero Fernando Santibanz. Marrying two traditions into a unique example of this celebratory spirit, the Xicaru Pechuga Mole is excatly that. First traditional Mole is hand ground using peppers, spices and of course chocolate. The finished mole is added to the copper potstills with the ordinario (first run of distillation) and seven whole chickens. Unlike most pechuga, the meat is not suspended in the still and while the chickens give an unquestionable meatiness, it is ...

Introducing the newest addition to Jake Lustig's ArteNOM portfolio, the deliciously fruit-forward blanco expression from NOM 1579. The mountain town of Jesús-María (elev. 6,079’) is Tequila’s highest altitude agave region, and the El Pandillo Distillery is arguably one of the most forward-thinking and sustainable distilleries in the business. There, Felipe Camarena masterfully crafts this bright, aromatic tequila from stressed hillside agave plants, slowly roasted in brick ovens and macerated intact with fiber for a pronounced agave flavor. It's an insta...

Banuelos is located in Zacatecas, just about 10km outside of the DO for Tequila. They started producting this blue weber (tequilana) agave spirit long before the DO for Tequila was defined in the 1970's. Essentially this is classic tequila in every sense but in regulatory name. In fact, it's more like the Tequila of yesteryear before most modern Tequila switched to industrialized farming and production shortcuts. They ferment with wild yeast and all of the agave is tahona crushed. The tequilana is cooked above ground, so no smoke here. Since they're tec...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Look for a bold, vegetal aroma marked by bell and jalapeño pepper. The palate is fairly spicy up front, with black pepper and jalapeño sparks against a vegetal core. The mineral-laced finish is clean and bracing. (KN)" (05/2017) K&L Notes: El Tesoro de Don Felipe Tequila began in 1937 when the brand's namesake founded the still traditional distillery in Los Altos (the highlands) of Jalisco, Mexico. The methods implemented by Don Felipe de Jesús Camarena remain in tact today, including traditional hornos (ovens) and tahona wh...

Codigo 1530 is private recipe tequila that has been contracted by a family in Los Cabos for almost a decade, before finally becoming a commercial product in the U.S. Made at NOM 1500 by Tequileria las Juntas, the product was nameless for many years, existing solely as the house brand for family members and friends. Created by certified Maestro Tequilero Guillermo Barroso Arnaud, El Pintor is an expression of Arnaud's quest to find balance between the art and science of tequila creation. Utilizing highland agave cooked in autoclaves for 10 hours, the clean steamed agave is then fermented with ancestral yeasts from the hacienda that's been cultivated for decades. The tequila is then slowly distilled on very small copper pot stills. The spirit rests in used bourbon barrels for between 3-4 years before a proprietary filtration processes is used to remove the subtle amb...

The ultra-rare stocks that go into the exquisite Tears of Llorona come from Master Tequilero German Gonzalez's personal storage. Distilled from hand-selected piñas at La Tequilana, Tears is aged for at least 4.5 years and is supposedly "double barreled." Gonzalez uses his own proprietary yeast strain to ferment the agave, and it is distilled in copper pots, unlike some of Tequilanas' other tequilas, which go through column stills. Each cask is hand selected and blended in ultra-small batches. While I tend to lean away from older tequila (because I don't ...

The result is a bright fresh herbaceous and complete unique concoction that's perfect with agave and other white spirits. Barril is a type of wild agave that grows in the hills of San Agustin Amatengo, Oaxaca, where the Bruxo No. 3 mezcal is made. Mezcalero Tio Conejo (Uncle Rabbit) uses donkeys to transport the agave back to his distillery where they are fermented and distilled in the village. The flavors are incredibly savory and mineral at the same time. There are flinty notes that mesh with peppery herbs and dried leaves on a rather creamy and supple palate. Absolutely incredible stuff.

Enemigo 89, a rare clear añejo, is known by the name of 'Cristalino' in Mexico. The Tequila is aged traditionally for over a year, resting in custom-made American Oak barrels which infuse and color the liquid. The now amber liquid is then filtered using carbon and cellulose which removes the color, leaving behind the more delicate, mineral and floral notes circling the elegant agave. Enemigo 89 was the first ever and only clear añejo to ever win Double Gold at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Named 'eighty-nine' as a testament to ...

El Mero Mero Mezcal is the first liquor made from agave that was born with a tasting note issued by a professional sommelier, Eduardo Lópeztecillos: “Clean and brilliant. Pearls that confirm its alcoholic degree. In nose: cooked Maguey smoked with herbal notes. Strong resin shades, dampness and clay. Open attack in mouth, congruent with its aromas with a very long ending. Rubbing it in hand it dispels in resin and agave. It combines with moles, adobos, spicy seafood, pibil or havanero.” Tobalá is a very small wild type of maguey found in the mountains s...

This wonderful and unique offering from Bruxo has a slightly confusing name. This Pechuga de Maguey is NOT the type of Pechuga that would include a chicken breast in the still, but instead they are referring to the breast of the Maguey. This means that after distilling their classic espadin, the Pechuga de Maguey is steeped for several days with freshly roasted Agave split down the middle to expose the heart (or breast) of the plant. Expect the rich sweet flavors of roasting agave with the subtle smokiness behind. The color is slightly off clear due to t...
