92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Co-owned by actor George Clooney and nightlife impresario Rande Gerber, this blanco is smooth and light. The aromas are restrained, but on the palate look for mild agave sweetness backed by lemon zest, ginger and white pepper sparks, plus a candied lemon-peel note on the gentle exit. (KN)" (05/2014) K&L Notes: Very rarely does a product like this come to our attention without a sneer or a snicker. But when "The Cloons" writes his name on something, you better show it some respect. So, with that tiny amount of atypical goodwi...

Wine Enthusiast: "The mild aroma hints at green bell peppers; the flavor also has a distinct vegetal note, mixing bell and jalapeño peppers along with agave. Finishes long, with white pepper and ginger sparks. (KN)" (11/2014) K&L Notes: Espolón tequila is finally back in the U.S. with a fantastic new package and a new unbelievable price. The label is an ultra-cool "Dia de los Muertos" style mural, which immediately catches the eye. The price tag is more than reasonable, so that's two for two. If you actually get around to tasting it, then you're going ...

Wine & Spirits: "*Year's Best Spirits 2016* Years ago, I largely abandoned Tequila for the more complex, flavorful and soulful terrain of mezcal. Pasote is one of the few Tequilas I’ve tasted that reminds me why the spirit became popular in the first place. Pasote’s rich, smooth texture carries an abundance of powerful flavor, from exotic fruit and vegetable notes to peppery highlights and subtle minerality. That Pasote should taste like this perhaps shouldn’t surprise: It’s made by agave wizard Felipe Camarena, whose family has consistently produced the...

Còdigo 1530 is private-recipe tequila that has been contracted by a family in Los Cabos for almost a decade, before finally becoming a commercial product in the U.S. Made at NOM 1500 by Tequileria las Juntas, the product was nameless for many years, existing solely as the house brand for family members and friends. Now available for the first time in retailers, Còdigo brings an exciting and diverse line up of unique tequilas to a market that's long been saturated by similar products. The Còdigo rosa is an expressive and flavorful tequila just like the bl...

Real Minero is wildly considered one of the finest mezcal producers. The Mendoza family has farmed Agave for decades but they've been distilling since the 70s and become one of Mexico's most sought after producers. Using clay pot stills, they produce one of the cleanest highest quality products around, but only about 300 liters per month so stocks are tight. It's certified organic, Oaxacan owned and absolutely delicious. Father, Lorenzo Angeles Mendoza, is the brawn, while Graciela Angeles Carreño heart and soul (and of course the brains) of the operatio...

From the distillery of Enrique Fonseca, the man behind the legendary K&L Fuenteseca, comes this value-priced label of liter-sized tequila that seems almost too good to be true. I'm willing to bet we'll have a problem selling the Cimarron selections, rather than the ridiculous success we should experience, simply because people will wonder why it's so cheap? Don't let the price tag sway you, however -- this is clean, fresh, easy-drinking tequila made from 100% agave that is definitely up to Enrique's high standards. The reposado is mellow and soft on the ...

Berta Vazquez, one of Mexico's few female distillers, made this excpetional espadin from 9-year-old agaves. Horse drawn tahona crushed the agave after cooking in an earthen oven covered with volcanic rocks and fired with oak and guamuchil. Double distilled on copper alambiques in 2018, the resulting spirit is incredibly flavorful. It has a savory scent like a fresh cut rubber tree and a texture and weight that is oily but not resiny. The fruit flavors abound and the finish lasts forever.

Produced with wild Tobala agave, Bruxo's #5 is the distiller's most limited production bottling. Made by mezcalero Candido Reyes, the mezcal is described by the producer as exhibiting a "cyrstaline and polished pearl shine" with notes of butter and ripe tropical fruits followed by other fruit flavors such as peach, pineapple and banana and subtle smoky notes.

According to the importer: "Tequila Cascahuin is produced in its namesake distillery in El Arenal, Jalisco, MX, in the lowlands of Jalisco (NOM 1123). … The juices extracted from the brick-oven-roasted agave is fermented with bagasse fibers from that same agave, enhancing flavor profiles and ensuring that the final product boasts the quality of its parent agave. The result is a distilled-to-proof tequila that’s capable of asserting itself in any cocktail, with enough complexity to be equally at home in a sipping glass."

Distiller's notes: "Alberto Martinez Lopez has been distilling sierra negra agave spirits for over three decades. He and his son-in-law Reynaldo distill the massive agave Sierra Negra (A. Americana) in their traditional palenque in Santa Catarina Albarradas, Oaxaca. Alberto and Reynaldo harvest cultivated Sierra Negra that take twelve to fifteen years to reach their maturity. Once harvested, Alberto bakes the agave in an earthen oven with encino oak and river rocks for a week. He and Reynaldo subsequently mash the cooked agave by hand with wooden mallet...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Look for a bold, vegetal aroma marked by bell and jalapeño pepper. The palate is fairly spicy up front, with black pepper and jalapeño sparks against a vegetal core. The mineral-laced finish is clean and bracing. (KN)" (05/2017) K&L Notes: El Tesoro de Don Felipe Tequila began in 1937 when the brand's namesake founded the still traditional distillery in Los Altos (the highlands) of Jalisco, Mexico. The methods implemented by Don Felipe de Jesús Camarena remain in tact today, including traditional hornos (ovens) and tahona wh...

Casa Tequileña is owned and operated by Enrique Fonesca, known as El Arquitecto, a fifth-generation grower and master distiller who holds one of the largest plots of agave in the industry. This añejo is made to showcase the oak without overshadowing the agave. The nose is amazing! Again, subdued and needing to be coaxed, but incredible when it finally arrives. Nutty aromas with toasted vanilla, but neither rich nor oaky. Warm baking spices on the palate, which is incredibly lean for an añejo! This is a blend of two- and three-year-old tequilas aged exclu...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Pale straw in the glass, this reposado Tequila has a savory, herb-tinged aroma that suggests jalapeño, bell pepper and mint. Enrique Fonseca distilled this expression in early Spring 2010, with three-quarters of the bottling made in a double-copper column still with removed plates to achieve a lower distillation proof and the remaining quarter made in an alembic pot still. Half of the run was then stored in American white oak previously used to age California red wine, and the remaining half barreled in used dark French oak. The casks were then stored for seven years at 3,800 feet elevation in a cool-climate subterranean barrel room.

Introducing the newest addition to Jake Lustig's ArteNOM portfolio, the deliciously fruit-forward blanco expression from NOM 1579. The mountain town of Jesús-María (elev. 6,079’) is Tequila’s highest altitude agave region, and the El Pandillo Distillery is arguably one of the most forward-thinking and sustainable distilleries in the business. There, Felipe Camarena masterfully crafts this bright, aromatic tequila from stressed hillside agave plants, slowly roasted in brick ovens and macerated intact with fiber for a pronounced agave flavor. It's an insta...

Created by certified Maestro Tequilero Guillermo Barroso Arnaud, El Pintor is an expression of Arnaud's quest to find balance between the art and science of tequila creation. Utilizing highland agave cooked in autoclaves for 10 hours, the clean steamed agave is then fermented with ancestral yeasts from the hacienda that's been cultivated for decades. The tequila is then slowly distilled on very small copper pot stills. The spirit rests in used bourbon barrels for between 3-4 years before a proprietary filtration processes is used to remove the subtle amb...

Los Vecinos Del Campo is the new mezcal project from Sazerac and Carmen Villareal of Casa San Matias. As with any upstart mezcal brand our first instinct is to tread with caution. There's alot of opportunity to get things wrong when bringing a new mezcal to market, but we're extremely happy to note that our friends from New Orleans avoided all of them. Instead, we get an incredible affordable authentic artesenal mezcal from the village of San Miguel Ejutla in Oaxaca's central valley. Carmen's connections to the area go way back and she was able to identi...

Madre Mezcal hails from the tiny village of San Dionisio Ocotepec. In between Chichicapam and Matatlan, the village is in the heart of Mezcal country. The Garcia Morales family has been growing agave for generations here and they make one of the most balanced and inviting mezcals we've ever come across. A blend of estate grown Espadin and wild harvest Cuishe, the agave is cooked for days over pine. After being pressed in the traditional tahona, the juice is fermented naturally over the course of nearly two weeks and distilled twice in copper potstills. D...

Enemigo 89, a rare clear añejo, is known by the name of 'Cristalino' in Mexico. The Tequila is aged traditionally for over a year, resting in custom-made American Oak barrels which infuse and color the liquid. The now amber liquid is then filtered using carbon and cellulose which removes the color, leaving behind the more delicate, mineral and floral notes circling the elegant agave. Enemigo 89 was the first ever and only clear añejo to ever win Double Gold at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Named 'eighty-nine' as a testament to ...

Maestro Ramon Miranda has delivered a Bacanora of stunning complexity and remarkably approachability. Made from Angustifolia Haw (Pacifica) in the village of Alamos in southern Sonora this agave is cooked in a traditional underground oven with mesquite and oak for fuel. After a wild fermentation in drums there are two distillations in stainless/copper stills. The Bacanora is slightly smoky and marked by an incredible mint tone. Texturally beautiful. If you're exploring agave spirits, do not miss this offering.

Rey Campero Espadin uses wild agave Espadin that is fermented in open air with wild yeasts. In true Rey Campero fashion, only the highest quality agave are used in production and the difference between wild agave Espadin instead of the more commonly used farmed Espadin makes a world of difference in this Mezcal. The Rey Campero Espadin is also aged before bottling, which gives it a much softer feel.

96-100 points Wine Enthusiast: "Elegant nose emits traces of mushrooms, dried herbs and lead pencil with deeper scents of mustard seed, vanilla bean and toffee. El Mero Mero Mezcal is the first liquor made from agave that was born with a tasting note issued by a professional sommelier, Eduardo Lópeztecillos: “Clean and brilliant. Pearls that confirm its alcoholic degree. In nose: cooked Maguey smoked with herbal notes. Strong resin shades, dampness and clay. Open attack in mouth, congruent with its aromas with a very long ending. Rubbing it in hand it dispels in resin and agave. It combines with moles, adobos, spicy seafood, pibil or havanero.” Tobalá is a very small wild type of maguey found in the mountains s...

Father and son team Felipe and Ageo are 3rd and 4th generation to produce excellent mezcal in Miahuatlan. Their small community of Mengoli de Morelos happens to have some of Oaxaca's best distillers. Caramel-y brown in the glass, look for a lightly herbaceous aroma similar to root beer and rounded flavors that mix caramel and cocoa with raisin and cinnamon heat, with a faint smokiness on the finish. Particularly harmonious mixed in cocktails with brown spirits like whiskey. In 1937, then Mexican President Lázaro Cárdenas created the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) at a time when only a fraction of the country’s population had electricity. The objective was no less than to illuminate the night with electric innovation and the brightness of a multitude of incandescent bulbs.
