Casa Dragones Joven Sipping Tequila (750ml - ships as a 1.5L due to bottle shape)
Top Pick!
96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Although billed as a joven, this Tequila is blended with a touch of añejo. The end result is extraordinarily smooth, with a very sweet, fruity, almost wine-like nose but a bold, pure peppery flavor that finishes cleanly. The packaging is gift-worthy, presenting the bottle in a gold-and-robin’s egg blue box, like a precious jewel. (KN)" (05/2013) K&L Notes: Casa Dragones is 100% Blue Agave Joven Tequila. Hand-made in small batches using a multiple distillation process for a clean, extra soft taste. The Maestro Tequilero hand-...

5 Sentidos K&L Exclusive Ensamble De 6 Magueyes "Batch 6M-19" (Atenogenes and José Garcia) San Isidro Guishe Uncertified Oaxacan Mezcal (750ml)
Top Pick!
This incredible small-batch mezcal was created by the Atenogenes and José Garcia in the town of San Isidro Guishe. A re-creation of what would have been typical in mezcal production just a few decades ago, a field blend in the truest sense of the word. Here the father and son team harvested the mature agave from a single field grown by a neighbor. In exchange the neighbor (or Magueyero) received forty liters of this incredible batch of mezcal, a fine payment for the nearly 2 tons of ripe agave that were needed to distill this 183-liter batch. Most of the...

5 Sentidos K&L Exclusive Espadin "Batch ESALB01-19" (Alberto Martinez) Santa Catarina Albarradas Uncertified Oaxacan Mezcal (750ml)
Top Pick!
5 Sentidos started as the house spirit of the acclaimed restaurant in Oaxaca city "El Destilado" and has become a platform to uplift numerous traditional producers who otherwise wouldn't be able to sell their products on the international stage. There's a stigma in Mexico of exporting uncertified agave spirits, driven by the idea that mezcal's denomination of origin is synonymous with quality. In fact, the system shuts out many traditional producers and allows countless industrial practices that should be considered inferior. That's why many of the great...

Tequila Tapatio "Excelencia" Extra Añejo Tequila (1L)
Top Pick!
The oldest expression from Carlos Camarena's Tapatio brand is finally available stateside. Rich and butterscotchy and with hints of black pepper and citrus. It is distilled exclusively from perfectly matured agave at the famous La Altena distillery in Arandas. When they tell you how this stuff was made, it just boggles the mind. Distilled in 2000, this is the official SECOND batch of Excelencia. It was filled into the same barrels as the first directly after they were dumped and aged for four years before being transferred into glass containers. There it...

Rey Campero Tepextate + Pulquero K&L Exclusive Single Batch Lot#D5001-TP Mezcal (750ml)
Top Pick!
This single batch of Rey Campero mezcal yeilded roughly 264 bottles, half of which remained in Mexico. The other half is exclusive to K&L. Distilled in October 2017, this batch rested for 30 months in glass before being bottled. This extended resting process gives this particular batch an increased sense of smoothness and elegance while carrying all of the robust flavors of Tepextate (A. Marmorata) and Pulquero (A. Atrovirens) agaves. This unique 50/50 field blend was a one time production created by Romulo Sanchez almost 3 years ago. This is one of the ...

Còdigo 1530 K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Añejo Tequila (750ml)
Top Pick!
Còdigo is the most popular tequila producer we carry at K&L, and for good reason. They set themselves apart in several ways. For starters, they only use "extra maduro" or "overly mature" agave for their tequila. These extremely ripe agaves make a rich and flavorful tequila with a luscious texture and intensity of fruit that is rarely found from larger producers who can't get enough quality agave to support their production levels. The second major difference in Còdigo's tequilas is their use of oak. They only age in Napa Cabernet barrels, not used bourbo...

Siembra Valles Ancestral is a project conceived of a love of history and a desire to know tequila from its roots, celebrating its true identity and a curiosity of what the past once tasted like. With agave untouched by machine, the Ancestral boasts the complexity of nature's flavors and the skills of tequilero ancestry. It begins its journey through time in the pristine blue agave fields nurtured by the Rosales family’s team of expert cultivators, jimadores, and a lowland terroir. The fruitful plants can credit their rich flavors to a pesticide-free land...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The hand-painted ceramic bottle is gorgeous, but so is what's in the bottle: a blend of three-four- and five-year old Tequilas. Look for a deep amber hue and complex aromas that unfold jalapeño, brown sugar and cocoa. The palate-coating, slightly viscous palate opens with clove and coriander, warming to cocoa, browned butter, and sarsaparilla, and finishes on black pepper and cinnamon. The overall effect almost reads like a Tequila-based amaro. (KN)" (05/2019) K&L Notes: Grand Mayan is a rare Extra Añejo from the exceptional...

Codigo 1530 is private recipe tequila that has been contracted by a family in Los Cabos for almost a decade, before finally becoming a commercial product in the U.S. Made at NOM 1500 by Tequileria las Juntas, the product was nameless for many years, existing solely as the house brand for family members and friends. Now available for the first time in retail shops, Codigo brings an exciting and diverse lineup of unique tequilas to a market that's long been saturated by similar products. The Codigo extra anejo is the first ultra premium tequila to hit the ...

Real Minero is wildly considered one of the finest mezcal producers. The Mendoza family has farmed Agave for decades but they've been distilling since the 70s and become one of Mexico's most sought after producers. Using clay pot stills, they produce one of the cleanest highest quality products around, but only about 300 liters per month so stocks are tight. It's certified organic, Oaxacan owned and absolutely delicious. Father, Lorenzo Angeles Mendoza, is the brawn, while Graciela Angeles Carreño heart and soul (and of course the brains) of the operatio...

Produced with wild Tobala agave, Bruxo's #5 is the distiller's most limited production bottling. Distiller's notes: "Alberto Martinez Lopez has been distilling sierra negra agave spirits for over three decades. He and his son-in-law Reynaldo distill the massive agave Sierra Negra (A. Americana) in their traditional palenque in Santa Catarina Albarradas, Oaxaca. Alberto and Reynaldo harvest cultivated Sierra Negra that take twelve to fifteen years to reach their maturity. Once harvested, Alberto bakes the agave in an earthen oven with encino oak and river rocks for a week. He and Reynaldo subsequently mash the cooked agave by hand with wooden mallet...

Enrique Fonseca distilled this expression in early Spring 2010, with three-quarters of the bottling made in a double-copper column still with removed plates to achieve a lower distillation proof and the remaining quarter made in an alembic pot still. Half of the run was then stored in American white oak previously used to age California red wine, and the remaining half barreled in used dark French oak. The casks were then stored for seven years at 3,800 feet elevation in a cool-climate subterranean barrel room.

Father and son team Felipe and Ageo are 3rd and 4th generation to produce excellent mezcal in Miahuatlan. Their small community of Mengoli de Morelos happens to have some of Oaxaca's best distillers. This area is renowned for the abundance of Karwainski (Madrecuixe, bicuixe, tobaxiche) and an unusual additional piece on their copper potstills called the "refrescador". This odd apparatus sits on top of the potstill like a mini water cooled column, though the Cortes do not use plates inside the apparatus. It catches and condenses the heaviest spirits as f...

Don Julio 1942 Añejo Tequila (750ml) (cannot ship, in store pick up only) (Previously $130) (Previously $130)
Top Pick!
98 points Wine Enthusiast: "A stunning limited-edition añejo. The golden color and caramel scent hint at what’s to come: sweet agave flavor, a lingering whisper of smoke and mellow notes of tropical fruit, Sauternes and butterscotch. (KN)" (05/2011) K&L Notes: Cannot be shipped, will call pick up only. 96-100 points Wine Enthusiast: "First nosing passes pick up incredibly zesty and harmonious aromas of dill, fennel and pepper; another seven minutes sees the bouquet turn elegant, oaky and herbal. Palate entry is semisweet, with deft traces of caramel and vanilla; by midpalate the flavors include marzipan, hard candy, dried herbs, green pepper and vanilla. Finish is long, luxurious and stately." (06/2006)

This unprecedented collaboration between the four Orendain brothers was created to honor their father Don Eduardo Orendain Gonzalez. Using traditional techniques and hand-selected agave, this project recreates the quality and style that the Don Eduardo would have produced himself decades ago. Each brother contributed barrels that were at least 10 years old to this tiny batch of exceptional ultra aged tequila. The resulting tequila is dense and dark with plenty of deep complex oak, but retains its agave nature nonetheless. Expect a powerful bouquet of roa...

Originating from the town of Zoquitlan, this is one of the rarer Silvestre agaves and the first we've stocked in the store. The flavor of the Agave recalls Tobala with tons of tropical fruit and citrus. That said there's much more earthy gravel and pepper. Richly textured and ultra dense, the smoke is the perfect frame to the wild flavors of this special plant. Mineral and spice build on the finish leaving you with a long lingering finish.

This delicious and tiny batch of mezcal from Reina Sanchez is fiery and fun as the fiesty Mezcalero who made it. Reina Sanchez is known for her quick wit and biting humor, as much as she's known for her powerfully complex mezcals. Not only does the fact that she is one of just a few women who own and operate a palenque in the region set her apart from her many compatriots but the quality of the spirits she produces does as well. Here she's taking Tequila back to its roots, using Blue Weber grown locally and processing it just as she would any of her othe...

Lalocura's clay pot distilled mezcales have built a steady cult following of chefs, writers, and mezcal-heads, who turn up at the palenque each day hoping to spend a few hours listening to maestro mezcalero Eduardo "Lalo" Ángeles tell stories. This producer and his sons make a very special mezcal called Pechuga that is many a bartender's darling due to its distinctively smoky-spicy aromas and flavors. Spirits critics have described it as "ouzo-like" for its intense petrol and anise-driven profile. It is triple-distilled and limited in production due to the special seasonal ingredients it requires—wild mountain apples and plums—which are part of a special combination of fruits and rice added to the distillate for the third distillation, which takes place over the period of 24 hours and requires...

A stunning acheivement from Felipe Camarena at NOM 1579. 48 months in American oak is perfectly balanced with the intensity of sweet agave flavors and tons of natural pepper spice from the plant. Shockingly light in color for such a well aged tequila, this is all about the quality of the agave itself and the careful distillation. The elegant wood profile highlights all the work put in before those 4 years in barrel perfectly.
