Tequila Fortaleza Reposado Tequila (750ml)
Top Pick!
Guillermo Erickson Sauza is a fifth generation tequila maker who hand-crafts beautiful, artisanal tequila at his century-old estate. His tartabuelo (great-great-grandfather), Don Cenobio was the first person to export tequila to the US, way back in the 1860s, starting his own brand in the 1870s. That tequila (Sauza) was passed down the generations before being sold by Guillermo's grandfather in 1976. Tequila Fortaleza is a return to his roots and to the traditional methods, including the use of a stone mill called a Tahona to crush the agave, a small, c...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The handpainted ceramic bottle is gorgeous, but so is what’s in the bottle: a blend of three-four- and five-year old Tequilas. Look for a deep amber hue and complex aromas that unfold jalapeño, brown sugar and cocoa. The palate-coating, slightly viscous palate opens with clove and coriander, warming to cocoa, browned butter, and sarsaparilla, and finishes on black pepper and cinnamon. The overall effect almost reads like a Tequila-based amaro. (KN)" (05/2019) K&L Notes: Grand Mayan is a rare Extra Añejo from the exceptional ...

Bozal Tepeztate Mezcal (750ml)
Back In Stock!
The Tepeztate agave hearsta is cooked in earthen pit ovens and crushed by horse drawn tahona. Natural yeast is allowed to do its thing in open top fermenters before a double distillation and resting period. The Tepeztate grows only on steep, rocky cliffs and is wild harvested, providing powerful and unique floral aromas. This combined with an incredible mineral drive, light smokiness, and excellent price make this the perfect mezcal for those looking to explore the world of wild agave without breaking the bank.

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Hitting all the right notes, this 18-month-aged añejo melds tropical fruit and fresh-cut apple with silky vanilla and agave nectar, finishing on a brisk peppery-cinnamon note. *Best of the Year Spirits 2016* (KN)" (05/2016)

This tequila is aged two to three years in oak barrels and has a beautiful silky smooth character that does añejo right: rich, but not cloyingly sweet. Guillermo Erickson Sauza, a fifth-generation family member, produces Tequila Fortaleza, using traditional techniques. This is a beautiful, artisan, hand-crafted, stone milled tequila. Tequila Fortaleza is produced entirely within the walls of their estate, using centuries old traditional methods which, although are very labor intensive, create a tequila which is unequaled in taste and smoothness. Using an...

Koch El Mezcal is one of Mexico's most sought after brands. We've waited for years for this special brand to arrive and now that it's finally here it's selling out as quickly as we can get it. Koch El Mezcal is headed by Carlos Moreno, the family is committed to sustainable cultivation and traditional methodology. They specialize in Wild Agave cultivation and operate two palenques, which distill in distinctly different styles. This Tepextate comes from the village of San Baltzarar Guelavila. Master Mescalero Pedro Hernandez roasts the 15 year old pinas i...

Casa Tequileña is owned and operated by Enrique Fonesca, known as El Arquitecto, a fifth-generation grower and master distiller who holds one of the largest plots of agave in the industry. This añejo is made to showcase the oak without overshadowing the agave. The nose is amazing! Again, subdued and needing to be coaxed, but incredible when it finally arrives. Nutty aromas with toasted vanilla, but neither rich nor oaky. Warm baking spices on the palate, which is incredibly lean for an añejo! This is a blend of two- and three-year-old tequilas aged exclu...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Inside the attractive squared bottle, the aromas and flavors of this highlands Tequila tend toward honey, with light touches of tropical fruit, jalapeño and a fleeting floral note on the elongated, rounded finish. *Top 50 Spirits 2013* (KN)" (05/2013) K&L Notes: Frank Mendez called me one day and told me he'd like to come present his new family project: Gran Dovejo tequila. While Frank and his cousin don't come from a tequila-making background, they consider themselves aficionados and feel the same exasperation I do toward ...

The "old way" of making mezcal is a loaded term, but in this case Los Nahuales is referring to a method of dilution using the tails of the first run (codas) with the heart of the second distillation. This practice was originally banned by the NORMA regulations governing the production and export of mezcal, but Nahuales has had the prohibition over turned. That means that all certified mezcal that's been diluted has used water to achieve a lower proof, instead of this old method. The tails from the first run are full of life and complexity. They add textu...

Mezcal fans rejoice. Breaking Bad fans rejoice. Dos Hombres Mezcal has arrived. After Breaking Bad wrapped, Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston were pretty bummed out they wouldn't be working together anymore, so they did what any spirit loving person would do and decided to start a Mezcal brand. However, they also learned lessons from some other celeb brands and realized they didn't want to just slap their name on something they liked, but source a quality product from real artisans. Turns out that Bryan and Aaron have quite different tastes when it comes to ...

The magnificent Casa Dragones has been blowing it up in the high-end tequila market. They've finally made their exquisite lowland tequila available to the masses. This surprisingly approachable blanco has all the finesse and structure of the Joven, but without the sweet vanilla and spice oak. This shows tons of apple and pear, with slight whiffs of the minerally vegetable that we expect from a lowland. On the palate it's clean and bright with lovely sweet fruit and only a slight cracked pepper quality. Ultimately, a fine follow up to a very difficult to ...

Xicaru Pechuga Mole Mezcal (750ml)
New!
This unusual experimental expression of the traditional Oaxacan Pechuga comes from Mezcalero Fernando Santibanz. Marrying two traditions into a unique example of this celebratory spirit, the Xicaru Pechuga Mole is excatly that. First traditional Mole is hand ground using peppers, spices and of course chocolate. The finished mole is added to the copper potstills with the ordinario (first run of distillation) and seven whole chickens. Unlike most pechuga, the meat is not suspended in the still and while the chickens give an unquestionable meatiness, it is ...

[Cannot ship. Will call pick up only.] We've long sold the Danzantes mezcales at K&L (now known as "Los Nahuales" in the U.S. due to a trademark issue with the Danzantes name), but until today I never really understood where they stood in comparison to the other selections we carry. They're following the tequila model, which is the standard blanco, reposado, and añejo progression; choosing to market familiarity rather than specifics. The brand has actually enjoyed more success abroad with the Alipus portfolio, simply because of the wilder flavor profiles...

Enemigo 89, a rare clear añejo, is known by the name of 'Cristalino' in Mexico. The Tequila is aged traditionally for over a year, resting in custom-made American Oak barrels which infuse and color the liquid. The now amber liquid is then filtered using carbon and cellulose which removes the color, leaving behind the more delicate, mineral and floral notes circling the elegant agave. Enemigo 89 was the first ever and only clear añejo to ever win Double Gold at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Named 'eighty-nine' as a testament to ...

Barril is a type of wild agave that grows in the hills of San Agustin Amatengo, Oaxaca, where the Bruxo No. 3 mezcal is made. Mezcalero Tio Conejo (Uncle Rabbit) uses donkeys to transport the agave back to his distillery where they are fermented and distilled in the village. The flavors are incredibly savory and mineral at the same time. There are flinty notes that mesh with peppery herbs and dried leaves on a rather creamy and supple palate. Absolutely incredible stuff.

Maestro Ramon Miranda has delivered a Bacanora of stunning complexity and remarkably approachability. Made from Angustifolia Haw (Pacifica) in the village of Alamos in southern Sonora this agave is cooked in a traditional underground oven with mesquite and oak for fuel. After a wild fermentation in drums there are two distillations in stainless/copper stills. The Bacanora is slightly smoky and marked by an incredible mint tone. Texturally beautiful. If you're exploring agave spirits, do not miss this offering.

A blanco with a little extra bite, created with the bartender in mind. The distiller's notes: "While shaping the flavor profile for Siembra Valles Blanco, the team at Cascahuin kept coming back to taste the spirit at still-proof. The Rosales family has developed a slow distillation process that yields a Tequila at 92 proof. Lastly, Valles High Proof is rested for 11 months in glass demijohns for a truly unique experience." Now produced using Cascahuin's new Tahona press.

This wonderful and unique offering from Bruxo has a slightly confusing name. This Pechuga de Maguey is NOT the type of Pechuga that would include a chicken breast in the still, but instead they are referring to the breast of the Maguey. This means that after distilling their classic espadin, the Pechuga de Maguey is steeped for several days with freshly roasted Agave split down the middle to expose the heart (or breast) of the plant. Expect the rich sweet flavors of roasting agave with the subtle smokiness behind. The color is slightly off clear due to t...

NOM 1114 in Amatitan, Jalisco is the producer of Caballito Cerrero and considered one of the top tequila distilleries in the world.
