2016 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Crianza Rioja
Top Pick!
As is the case with so many other great spots in Spain, Bodega Casa Juan is located opposite the village church, in the beautiful walled pueblo of Laguardia. The winery is a converted flour mill, featuring concrete tanks for fermenting and blending the wine; and for aging, barrels that are used for up to seven years. These are traditional Riojas in elaboration and spirit, though the site specificity of their Laguardia and Villabuena vineyards confers a fruit character all its own to these wines. And what fruit! This crianza is a potpouri of mixed berries...

2014 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Reserva Rioja
Top Pick!
James Suckling: "A brambly array of violet and cassis aromas with a wealth of succulent, juicy and sappy berry flavors. Slightly rustic edge to the finish." (07/2019) K&L Notes: Composed of the same grapes in the same percentages as the Crianza, the Reserva is a barrel selection of wines that Angel feels can undergo longer aging in barrel and then in bottle. Aged a total of 27 months in barrels, then into concrete for more than a year, the Reserva also sees bottle aging until Angel deems it ready for release. This wine ramps up the intensity of the Cri...

2010 La Rioja Alta "904" Gran Reserva Rioja
Top Pick!
98 points James Suckling: "Fresh blueberries and brambleberries take center stage, which is striking for a wine of this age. There are also lots of roasted herbs, such as sage, not to mention floral elements, including lavender and dried violets. Then come cedar, sandalwood and tar. The tannins are incredibly round and soft, without the slightest hint of anything dry. This is among the most elegant of Riojas, where the acidity is wonderfully pronounced and cuts right through any touch of dried fruit. Long and powerful, yet subtle on the finish. Drink now...

2010 Los Autores "El Brujo" Gran Reserva Rioja
Top Pick!
Los Autores is a new, specialty negociant label charged with finding some of the most exclusive, compelling, unusual and traditional bottlings of Rioja on the market. We are excited to bring these wines into the United States, with the help of our friend, partner, and long-time Rioja resident María Alvarez. Future editions of Los Autores will always be available in tiny quantities. For this 2nd edition bottling, made by Rioja legend Ezequiel "El Brujo" García, we have a timeless, traditionally styled, Gran Reserva wine: primarily Rioja Alta fruit from lo...

2015 Galia "Villages" Tierra de Castilla y León
Top Pick!
95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The regular Galia has been renamed and is now the 2015 Villages since there are two more reds in the portfolio this year. It's a blend of grapes from different soils in all the villages they work (Piquera de San Esteban, Fuentelcesped, Hontangas, Cuevas de Provanco and Trigueros del Valle), trying to represent the Duero Valley as a whole. It has an intoxicating, perfumed and really attractive nose full of flowers, wild herbs and spices. The palate is medium-bodied and has the elegance and poise the nose was point...

There is a wonderful element of whimsy and joy at this tiny, family bodega located in Laguardia. The elephant logo, the onsite African art museum, as well as the name (there is no Señor de Lesmos, as it turns out) all speak to the family's joie de vivre and sense of humor. There is nothing funny about the quality of these wines, though. All estate fruit, hand harvested and carefully vinified with native yeasts, this is a hand-sewn wine with the purity, texture and elegance to prove it. Cuarteto is a classic, Alavesa style "maceración carbonica" wine whe...
Price: $11.99

Wine Spectator: "This fresh red offers bright cherry and berry flavors, showing light tannins and citrusy acidity. Round and supple, with a juicy finish. (TM, Web Only-2018)" K&L Notes: In the region of Cariñena, the Garnacha grape variety finds a lovely expression, one which is less high octane and lighter on its feet than in some of the neighboring regions. This easy drinker is a terrific bargain for anyone looking for a house red or a wine for a celebration.
Price: $7.99

91 points James Suckling: "There’s still a lot of life to this aging Gran Reserva. It shows dried cherries, dried raspberries, cedar, tobacco and spices. Round and resolved on the palate with a good, but not overbearing, drying effect to the tannins. Solid on the finish. Drink now. " (06/2019) K&L Notes: A K&L Direct Import! Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. All of the grapes for his red...

2014 Bodegas Muga "Selección Especial" Reserva Rioja
Top Pick!
94 points James Suckling: "Fruit-focused red, with strong aromas of ripe blackberries, red plums and gently complex earthy and spicy notes. There’s energetic, ripe dark and red fruit on the palate. Silky and crisp with fine tannins, giving a velvety and chalky texture. Upbeat and succulent finish." (08/2018) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Muga family is a lot happier about 2014 than your average Riojano, and the 2014 Selección Especial shows why. Through a selection of the vineyards and longer aging in barrel, this is a more-polished win...

2016 Bodegas Puelles Segundo Año Rioja
Top Pick!
A K&L Direct Import! This is a new wine for us from the Bodegas Puelles stable. "Segundo año" means second year, and refers to the fact that it is released in the wine's second year following harvest. Prior to the more widespread usage of terms such as crianza, reserva and gran reserva, wineries would indicate the age of their wine by stating segundo, cuarto, quinto or whichever was the appropriate year. Not merely a quaint throwback, however, this segundo año is delicious, with bright, crisp fruit of excellent purity and a judicious amount of barrel ag...

Mas Codina Brut Rosé Cava Penedes
Top Pick!
Mas Codina is a 40-hectare estate in Penedès which dates back to 1681. This Brut Rosé consists of Pinot Noir grown in their own vineyards in the middle Penedès region. Here the Garriga brothers are quite pleased with the results they see from the Pinot Noir grown in chalky-clay soils. They have been working organically for the past several years, and their first harvest doing so with certification was 2017. We direct import this delicious Cava, and it is arguably one of our best values in rosé bubbly right now. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)

Lesmos is back, and now in magnums, the ideal size for parties and for extended aging in your cellar! Composed of the same grapes in the same percentages as the Crianza, the Reserva is a barrel selection of wines that Angel feels can undergo longer aging in barrel and then in bottle. Aged a total of 27 months in barrels, then into concrete for more than a year, the Reserva also sees bottle aging until Angel deems it ready for release. This wine ramps up the intensity of the Crianza, with more pungent fruit as well as a real spicy and wild quality. In a v...

91 points James Suckling: "Some meat extract, as well as black fruit on the nose. There’s a solid, tannic base beneath the ripe fruit and generous body. The long finish is harmonious enough for immediate drinking." (08/2018)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The pure Tempranillo 2015 Ercavio Roble owes its name to the fact that it matured in oak (roble is the Spanish word for oak) for some six months. It is a straightforward, happy and easygoing Tempranillo, with aromas of fruit and spices. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. (LG)" (12/2017) K&L Notes: In La Mancha, Ercavio clearly rules the roost in the production of top quality Tempranillo, known locally as "Cencibel." In this huge wine production area where volume producers far outnumber quality ones, E...

2012 Cal Batlett "D'iatra" Gratallops Priorat
Top Pick!
Marc Ripoll was an early adopter of the Vi de Valla classification of Priorat villages. This is his “younger” vine bottling, meaning not the 60-80 year old vines, but with plenty of maturity to clearly express the ripe and concentrated terroir of Gratallops. D’Iatra is a Garnatxa-based blend with Carinyena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, all biodynamically grown, that is aged in 225 liter French oak barrels (20% new) for 12 months. It is rare to find wines from this region with bottle age at such a reasonable price. Do not let that be a concern. This ...

2015 Terroir al Limit "Torroja" Priorat
Top Pick!
93 points James Suckling: "Plenty of blue fruit and granite aromas with hints of violets on the nose. Full body, firm and linear with very fine tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Vertical and focused." (07/2017) 93 points Wine & Spirits: "Dominik Huber selects Garnacha and Cariñena from vineyards between 50 and 70 years old for this village wine. He begins the vinification with whole clusters, letting ambient yeasts do the work, then moves the juice into cement tanks and foudres to finish fermenting. It’s a pure and deliciously fresh expression o...

2017 Losada Mencia Bierzo
Top Pick!
95 points James Suckling: "Attractive, ripe and bright purple berries with raspberries here, too. The palate has a silky, elegant and plush feel with fine and sleek tannins, carrying fruit in fresh mode. Drink now or hold." (07/2019)

2013 Miguel Merino Reserva Rioja
Top Pick!
Neal Martin writes: "Located in the village of Briones in Rioja Alta, Bodegas Miguel Merino offer exemplary modern Rioja wine sourced from their own Tempranillo vines planted between 1931 and 1963 at an altitude of 550 meters above sea level. The Tempranillo vines are augmented by small plots of Mazuelo and Graciano that are occasionally bottled separately. The wine is then matured in a combination of new American, French and Hungarian oak."
Price: $34.99

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I returned to the 2016 La Montesa once it had been in bottle for almost eight months. It has all the rosemary, thyme and aromatic plants in the Monte Yerga in Alfaro. It has a note of incense. It's super juicy Garnacha with citrus freshness. It's incredible to have this quality at this price and almost unbelievable that they produced 690,000 bottles of it. A steal! Drink through 2024. (LG)" (06/2019) K&L Notes: Alvaro Palacios has roots that run deep into the soil of Rioja. He was born into one the region's mos...

2010 Pinna Fidelis "Roble Español" Ribera del Duero

Tinta del País (Tempranillo) aged 12 months in oak--in this case, not American, French, or Hungarian, but Spanish oak: "Roble Español."

2016 Pedro Martinez Alesanco Garnacha Rioja
Top Pick!
97 points Decanter: "2019 Platinum Decanter World Wine Awards "Expressive aromas of ripe red cherries with balsamic nuances. This is a superb Garnacha, it has such a generous fruit and lovely texture of sweet integrated tannins."" (04/2019) K&L Notes: Based in the Southern Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is bodega producing expressive, regionally specific wines at very reasonable prices. They are entirely self reliant in grapes, all of which are grown in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. The vineyard...

92 points James Suckling: "Black olives and elderberries on the nose. Then, some real concentration and rather fine tannins on the palate, making this an impressive, 2014 Ribera del Duero red. Long, harmonious finish. Drink or hold." (10/2018)

88-90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "They are very happy with the 2017s, and I previewed the 2017 Altaroses, the entry-level red that also has the subtitle Garnatxa Fina de Darmós. It's a bright and floral Garnacha, the Mediterranean grape par excellence on cool, sandy soils. It fermented with full clusters and matured in well-seasoned (no younger than ten years' old) barrels. It's quite fruit-driven with notes of red licorice, perfumed and aerial. This wine will not be bottled until October or November, after it has spent around one year in cask...

93 points James Suckling: "So fresh and elegant with more than enough concentration and structure, this is a fine example of a 2015 Reserva. Ripe-blackberry, licorice, smoke and bourbon notes. I love the velvety texture of the long, intense finish. Better from 2019 and with long aging potential." (08/2018) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The red blend 2015 Rioja Reserva is 80% Tempranillo with 12% Graciano, 6% Mazuelo and 2% Garnacha, a little more Graciano and Mazuelo, something logical in ripe and warm years like 2015. It's produced with gr...

From the producer: "Loxarel is happy to experiment with wine making and this 100% Garnacha wine is matured in 720 ltr clay amphoras for 4 months. Ops is the Roman goddess of fertility and plenty though Taurus the Bull features on the label as this constellation in biodynamic lore is said to influence growing. Loxarel is the brand name of the 4th generation family owned estate which, under the vision of Josep Mitjans, converted to organic production in 2002 then biodynamic in 2005."
Price: $14.99

James Suckling: "There’s a touch of macerated sultanas here, but otherwise the raspberries and blackberries are pleasant enough. The lifted fruit on the palate is a little kitschy, and this finishes in a simple way. Drink now. " (06/2019) K&L Notes: Based in the village of Peñafiel, at the eastern edge of the Valladolid province's famed "Golden Mile" along the N-122, Pinna Fidelis produces richly fruited, sumptuous Ribera del Duero wines based on tinto fino grown in primarily calcareous clay parcels at altitudes up to 900 meters above sea level.
Price: $14.99

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As the 2012 is already sold out, the 2013 Roda is the one in the market, and it has been in bottle since July 2015. 2013 was not an easy vintage, and they had to harvest selectively to come to this blend of Tempranillo with 3% Graciano, which has higher acidity than normal after the usual natural fermentation in oak vats and élevage in barriques. This is a completely different vintage from 2012, as 2013 was a very cold and wet year; the Mediterranean varieties did not achieve enough ripeness, and they couldn't in...

Located in the town of Roa, which is part of the Burgos district, Lambuena is a producer of D.O. Ribera del Duero wines. Ideally situated in the central growing region of the Ribera del Duero, in an area known for the very high quality of its chalky clay soils and its extreme continental climate, Lambuena makes big, generously fruited, yet structured and ultimately classic Ribera del Duero wines, very difficult to find these days in this D.O. A careful hand harvest and native yeast fermentation in tank followed by a brief four month stint in French and A...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The entry-level red 2017 Garnacha is an amazing value, as it has grapes from dry-farmed and head-pruned old vineyards in the village of Fitero. It fermented with full clusters, in stainless steel, with indigenous yeasts and bottled unoaked to preserve the freshness and acidity. This is lively and fresh due to harvesting early and using stems since the conditions of the year were warm and very dry. It's a juicy, delicious Garnacha and is really tasty. They are on their way up, and each vintage seems to be better t...

A longtime participant in the wine business, Miguel decided that rather than retire, he wanted to fulfill his dream of owning vines and making wine. Based in the Rioja Alta town of Briones, Miguel Merino makes, as he likes to put it, an "updated classic" style of Rioja, all from his own 2 hectares of vines and several hectares of vineyards owned by a close friend. All the fruit is from sloped, primarily chalky clay vineyards (Miguel is a fan of his slopes) within the cooler climate Rioja Alta town of Briones, which makes these wine a terrific showcase o...

91 points Wine & Spirits: "Expansive in all its aspects, this has dark, ripe, sweet layers of fruits and spices building into a hyper-generous body. With its pungent acidity, savage tannins and oak flavors, it needs at least five years to gain balance, but all the components of a very good Ribera del Duero are here. Just be patient." (06/2017) 90 points James Suckling: "The super-ripe blackberry, bitter chocolate and tar notes pour from the glass but, on the palate, the scale is more human and the fullish tannins are quite fine-grained. If the finish w...

2016 Cune Crianza Rioja
Back In Stock!
90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The red 2016 Cune Crianza is an affordable and classical blend of Tempranillo with some 15% Garnacha and Mazuelo that is easy to drink and understand, with a soft palate and an approachable profile. It has a bright nose with red fruit rather than black, quite aromatic and expressive. The palate is soft and approachable, very easy to drink, with a touch of freshness. They produced a whopping 4.5 million bottles of this! The bottle I tasted was bottled in April 2019 after 12 months in barrique. There are eight diff...

2015 Galia "Le Dean" Tierra de Castilla y León
Top Pick!
95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of two new, nuanced and elegant single-vineyard reds from 2015, the 2015 Le Dean is from the Valladolid part of Ribera del Duero. It has the elegant style of the house reds along with the minerality from the limestone soils and the old vines from a north-facing slope close to Vega Sicilia. This has a personality that justifies keeping it separate even though there are only 758 bottles of it. They used some 20% full clusters for the native fermentation, and the Tempranillo was co-fermented with the approximate...

91 points James Suckling: "Some really pretty, fresh dark cherries and mulberries pop out of the glass here. They follow through to a taut palate, encased in edgy tannins and driven along by direct acidity. Drink now." (06/2019)

Based in the Southern Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is bodega producing expressive, regionally specific wines at very reasonable prices. They are entirely self reliant in grapes, all of which are grown in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. The vineyards are closer to the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, a range whose elevation and snow-covered peaks are even more dramatic than the Sierra Cantabria range to the north. This is made from 100% Tempranillo grown in iron rich clay soils. In fact, this red t...

2015 Galia "Clos Santuy" Tierra de Castilla y León
Top Pick!
96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Clos Santuy is produced with the grapes from an ungrafted, head-pruned 1.12-hectare vineyard in the village of Piquera de San Esteban in the province of Soria, just outside the limits of Ribera del Duero, so it's sold as Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León. The vineyard is planted at some 968 meters in altitude on shallow sandstone soils and is enclosed by a dry stonewall. Bougnaud has been working and vinifying this plot separately since 2010 and noticed its personality and aging potential, but this 20...

91 points James Suckling: "A red with cherry and blackberry aromas and flavors. Medium body. Attractive acidity to the ripe fruit on the palate. Really enjoyable." (07/2019) K&L Notes: Lesmos is back, and now in magnums, the ideal size for parties and for extended aging in your cellar! All estate fruit, hand harvested, and carefully vinified with native yeasts, this is a hand-sewn wine with the purity, texture, and elegance to prove it. Produced from 85% Tempranillo and 15% Mazuelo, the wine shows a rather Burgundian nose of cherries and plums, opening...

Luis Gutierrez writes: "Loxarel produces still and sparkling wines from their 40 hectares of vineyards in Penedès, including a most amazing sparkling wine sold with the lees (without disgorgement), no less than 109 months after it's put in bottle! A total of 250,000 bottles per vintage are spread over a very wide portfolio that can be confusing and seems to be ever changing."
Price: $17.99

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Along with the 2015, I also tasted the following vintage of the top Toro red, the 2016 Aciano, which has a spectacular nose, with plenty of aromatic herbs, wild berries and flowers, with contained ripeness and great freshness. The palate has chalky minerality and a dry mouthfeel. The soils are very sandy, and phylloxera never attacked the vines in the village of El Pego. The wine is serious, delicious and has an austere mouthfeel, with those grainy, sandy tannins. This feels like a much more expensive wine. 7,500...

Jancis Robinson: "Mainly Tempranillo from Rioja Alavesa with 20% Garnacha from Rioja Alta. 60-year-old vines. Open vat fermentation with punching down. Aged in 500- and 600-litre oak barrels. Very complex and open nose, slightly natural scent showing dried herbs, spices, earthiness and a leathery touch. It is soft and delicate on the palate with light clay-textured tannins. It has a burgundian style and is very good quality. (FC) " (02/2017) K&L Notes: Native South African Bryan MacRobert grew up in a farming family, and has been quietly making some o...

This is our latest arrival from Miguel Merino, whom we like to call "the hardest working man in Rioja." Having begun his humble "retirement project" in the early 1990s by restoring an older bodega just down the hill from the historic town of Briones, Miguel either owns or rents to own a total of around 8 hectares of vines, all of which are located in Briones; not only is this village specific Rioja, but it happens to come from one of the most sought after villages in all of Rioja Alta, where many top bodegas have some of their most prized, older vineyard...

94 points James Suckling: "Very dense and tannic, but there's also plenty of fruit with mulberries on the nose. Is this pushing the envelope one step too far? Although the wine has powerful tannins, somehow it balances out and tastes fresh – an amazing feat. Better from 2018." (01/2018) 93 points Wine Spectator: "This red shows depth and density, with black cherry and blackberry flavors supported by firm, well-integrated tannins and juicy acidity. Notes of smoke, licorice and mineral emerge on the finish. Harmonious. Drink now through 2028. (TM)" (10/2...

96 points James Suckling: "Amazingly vivid cherries, wild herbs and licorice. Stunning texture on the palate, thanks to the great tannins that make it leap and bound over the palate. The finish is devastatingly fresh and mineral. Just beginning to reveal its depths. Drink or hold. (JS)" (12/2018) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The old-vine Cariñena 2015 Arbossar has a distinct note of licorice that grows in the glass. By working the vineyard with compost, they have managed to increase yields around 15%, and they feel the grapes achieve bette...

"Intense red cherry notes with notes of chocolate and Spring flowers. Well-balanced palate with more dark fruit notes" Winery tasting notes
Price: $10.99

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Marqués de Murrieta didn't produce their top red in 2008, so I tasted the 2009 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial. In 2009, the final blend was Tempranillo with 19% Mazuelo (or Cariñena), one of the highest percentages of Mazuelo ever. The grapes are now sourced from the La Plana vineyard within the Ygay estate, one of the higher-altitude plots at 485 meters. The grapes fermented and aged separately, the Tempranillo in American oak barrels and the Mazuelo in French barriques for 26 months, given its power. It ha...

94 points James Suckling: "A very light and delicately fragrant nose with red flowers, red cherries and a leafy, sappy edge. The palate has a succulent array of fresh strawberries and a sleek and juicy, elegant yet firm feel on the palate. Detailed and delicious garnacha here. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold." (07/2019) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Also bottled and ready for tasting, the 2017 Las Uvas de la Ira shows the progress that started from 2015 (which I also tasted for reference), a wine from the Real de San Vicente...

This curiously named red comes from vines (Red Grenache, Carignan and Ull de Llebre aka Tempranillo) aged 10 to 45 years from the districts of Falset, Marçà, Masroig, Capçanes and Els Guaimets. Different varieties are separately fermented. Maceration is long, at a temperature of 26ºC, followed by the malic-lactic fermentation. Once this process is completed the wine is aged in American oak casks for about 6 months with another 3 to 5 months of aging in bottles.

92 points James Suckling: "A very vibrant nose with such lively and fresh dark-plum and berry aromas. The palate has a very supple, long and sleek feel with impressive richness and ripeness on offer and good balance. Drink or hold." (07/2019) K&L Notes: Miguel Merino is our first direct import wine from Spain, and in our minds one of the great Rioja wineries. A single-vineyard bottling from one of their two oldest sites in Briones, planted in 1946, this cuvée takes the place of the wine formerly known as "Unnum." It's a terrific re-introduction, with d...
