2018 Domaine Renaud St-Véran

Once in a great while you find wines from the Mâcon so good that tasting them blind you are forced to apply some much higher (and more expensive) appellation to it. Often, such a wine comes from hillside vineyards, with better drainage and cooler nights. This is such a wine, from the slopes below the giant monolith of rock that is Solutré. Domaine Renaud is a small operation, making Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé and St-Veran from 12 hectares of estate vineyards. Their cellar is modern, and they use upright ovals for many of the wines, and stainless for others. T ...

Once in a great while you find wines from the Mâcon so good that tasting them blind you might think they're from a much higher (and more expensive) appellation. Domaine Renaud is a small operation, making Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé and St. Veran from 12 hectares of estate vineyards. Winery notes: "Purple colour with hints of ruby. With a hint of spice, the nose reveals the scent of raspberry and blackcurrant, with a definite hint of minerality. The perfect expression of its origins, the wine is pure and fresh on the palate."

2018 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie "Cuvée Tardive"

In the 1920s, when the Fleurie appellation was first created, the former landowner was infuriated with losing the Moulin-à-Vent appellation under which he had previously been classified. He created a label, using a photograph of his horse Roilette, and used the name Clos de la Roilette, without mentioning Fleurie. The current label does mention the name of the appellation, but only as a subscript. Coudert's Fleurie, often better known as "that delicious wine with the Horse on the label," comes from the Clos de la Roilette, in the village of Fleurie. The ...

2018 Allram Grüner Veltliner "Strass" Kamptal Austria

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "A touch of flint mixes in with the russet pear notes on the nose. The juicy palate shows of slenderness but also a texture that combines citrus pith, yeast and salt which complements the overriding juiciness well. This is light, dry and full of flavor. (AK)" (07/2019)

2018 Domaine Marcel Lapierre Morgon

From the importer: "Little would we know that when Marcel Lapierre took over the family domaine from his father in 1973, he was on the road to becoming a legend. The methods at Lapierre are just as revolutionary as they are traditional; the detail and precision with which they work is striking and entirely different from the mass-produced majority of Beaujolais on the market today. Decomposed granite comprises most of their eleven hectares, and the vines are an average of 45 years of age. Grapes are picked at the last possible moment to obtain the ripest ...

2018 Domaine Marcel Lapierre "Cuvée Lapierre MMXVIII" Morgon

This special Cuvée, produced only in the best years, is made from his 100-year old vines, mostly on the Cote de Py. With its waxed capsule and its longer cork, it is clear that Marcel thinks this is something special. And after tasting it, so do we! This has a tremendous sense of place and a texture that is so rich that is more reminiscence of Chambolle than Beaujolais. There are not many Cru Beaujolais that seem to be of true Cote d'Or quality, but this is one! Unmistakably Gamay and Morgon, but what weight and texture. Neal Martin writes: "These wines ...

2018 Domaine Gerard Tremblay Chablis Vieilles Vignes

Gerard Tremblay is officially en retrait, although his retirement is like that of many growers in that he continues to work, both in the vineyards and the cellar. His son Vincent Tremblay has now taken over the reins. They farm an impressive 35 hectares (about 90 acres) of vines, in appellations from Petite Chablis to Grand Cru Vaudesirs. The wines are terrific and extremely well-priced. Tremblay’s style is to press very carefully and slowly, to avoid extracting harsh or green tannins from the seeds. Then after a 24-hour settling, the wine is racked gent ...
