2018 Domaine Renaud St-Véran

Once in a great while you find wines from the Mâcon so good that tasting them blind you are forced to apply some much higher (and more expensive) appellation to it. Often, such a wine comes from hillside vineyards, with better drainage and cooler nights. This is such a wine, from the slopes below the giant monolith of rock that is Solutré. Domaine Renaud is a small operation, making Mâcon, Pouilly-Fuissé and St-Veran from 12 hectares of estate vineyards. Their cellar is modern, and they use upright ovals for many of the wines, and stainless for others. T ...

1998 Domaine Robert Gibourg Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Robert Gibourg no longer makes this wine, as the fruit was purchased on a lease agreement. The 1998 vintage in Burgundy was one of great difficulty, but the red wines that emerged have shown themselves to be structured and long-lived with robust tannins that somehow do not overshadow the fruit, even at this age. This Clos de la Roche Grand Cru bottling is squarely in its wheelhouse, showing excellent characteristics of both terroir and vintage.

Allen Meadows writes: "Jacques Bavard is a former Paris restaurateur and a fifth generation Puligny winemaker. He lives in the old stone house of his grandfather on the Grand Rue. However, he is not farming his family vines but has become a micro-négoce working closely with several growers. 2016 Domaine Marc Colin St. Aubin 1er Cru "En Montceau"

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Montceau is superb, and one of the highlights of Damien Colin's portfolio this year, wafting from the glass with a classy bouquet of lemon oil, tangerine, crisp yellow orchard fruit, honeycomb and wet stones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and tensile, with wonderful purity and depth at the core, brisk but ripe acids and a long, incisive and unmistakably mineral finish. 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly is showing very well from bottle, offering up notes of green orchard fruit, iodine, citrus oil and crushed chalk. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, tensile and concentrated, with bright acids, a deep core of crisp fruit and a chalky finish. It's an impeccable En Remilly from Damien Colin that I wouldn't hesitate to purchase for my own cellar. It has a very pure nose of raspberry and crushed strawberry fruit, the whole cluster element imparting a subtle forest floor/bay leaf aroma. The medium-bodied palate offers fine tannin, good grip on the back palate, more black than red fruit and a slight tobacco note toward the structured finish. Promising, but it will need three or four years in bottle. (NM)" (01/2019) 87-90 points ...

Allen Meadows - Burghound: "There is a noticeable if subtle note of barnyard on the otherwise attractive plum, dark cherry and humus scents. As this is presently constituted the barnyard element is not invasive but that is not a guarantee that it will not become more prominent with age." (04/2019)

This is really lovely juice and worth considering." The bouquet is pure, complex and very expressive, wafting from the glass in a blend of pear, delicious apple, spring flowers, a touch of crème patissière and a fine base of chalky soil tones. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very suave on the attack, with a fine core, bright, zesty acids and lovely cut and mineral drive on the long and classy finish. There is both excellent richness and delineation to the caressing medium-bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the well-balanced and perfumed finale. The color is a healthy medium ruby with lightening at the edge. A sweet, earthy, mineral, dusty, black cherry-scented nose is intense and ripe. In the mouth, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a plush texture, a subtle note of toasty oak, and a long, layered, heady finish. The acidity is present, but it is not intrusive. Similarly ripe in the mouth, but with its broad lemon and lime flavors given shape by surprising acidity and pungent notes of herbs and stone. Lovely old-vines density and intensity here. This is impeccably well-balanced and while the pliant mid-palate will make this approachable young, it should easily be capable of repaying mid-term keeping. Praise from William Kelly in Wine Advocate: "This is a very successful vintage for Laurent Lignier, who has produced a lovely set of wines from both his domaine holdings and négociant sources. As readers will know, winemaking is pretty classical at this address, with a short cold maceration, two to three weeks' maceration with one pigéage and one rémontage per day, and maturation in barrels, some third of which are new—if possible, without racking. Up to one-third stems may be retained, depending on the cuvée, but the influence is subtle and judicious. U ...
