2016 Domaine Petroni Corse Rouge (Corsica)

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Also a mix of Niellucciu and Syrah, the 2016 Corse Domaine Petroni came from granite soils along the Mediterranean and was raised all in demi-muids. This medium to full-bodied beauty certainly makes an impression. It has sensational minerality as well as notes of black cherries, blackberries, spice, and flowers. Deep, layered, incredibly elegant, and seamless, with the tension and vibrancy common from granite soils, it should evolve for well over a decade." (07/2018) K&L Notes: Domaine Petroni is an estate on the eastern side of ...

2016 Kalinda Paso Robles Red Blend

We can tell you this much: our Kalinda private label hooks you up with awesome wine at a fraction of what you'd otherwise pay for this exact same wine under its normal label. While we have to remain quiet about the source of this lovely red blend from Paso Robles, which contains 36% Syrah, 22% Primitivo (Zinfandel), 19% Grenache, and a few other grapes, we can tell you that it sells elsewhere at a higher premium. Get it while it lasts.

2016 Skyline (Thomas Fogarty) California Red Blend

Winemaker's Notes: "A blend of Tempranillo 33%, Zinfandel 28%, Grenache 15%, Petit Sirah 13%, Carignan 11%. The The Skyline Artisan Red is a red wine blended from selected lots of wine primarily from the sandy soils of Lodi. We look to create a wine with a generous fruit profile, soft tannins and ample spice. This blend pairs two traditional Spanish varieties, Tempranillo and Grenache, with Zinfandel and a touch of Petit Sirah & Carignan. The wines are fermented separately, raised in oak and then finished in stainless steel, highlighting their richness a ...

2016 Argiano "Solengo" Toscana

98 points James Suckling: "Very complex aromas of fresh flowers, blackberries and black licorice follow through to a full body, integrated tannins and a long and linear finish. Focused and racy. The tannins are so polished. Better in 2022, but already such a joy to try." (12/2018) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Petit Verdot (25%), Merlot (20%) and Sangiovese (5%), the 2016 Solengo is a terrific wine and I enjoyed my sample down to the very last drop that I coaxed from the bottle with happy enthusiasm. 2016 Alpha Estate "Hedgehog Vineyard" Xinomavro Amyndeon Greece

94 points Wine & Spirits: "Here’s a red to buy by the case-one case for this summer, as it’s light enough to chill, and another for the cellar, as this is structured enough to keep. It comes off of Angelos Iatridis’s younger vines, growing in a sandy 23-acre vineyard close to his winery. Cold-soaked and fermented in stainless-steel tanks, then aged in white-toasted barrels for one year and in bottle for another, it’s bright and fresh, with no perceptible wood influence to get in the way of the fruit. That fruit is cherry-red and layered with spice, notes ...

2016 Domaine Vico Corse Rouge (Corsica)

Wine Enthusiast: "Mint and red-fruit flavors dominate this lightly tannic wine, giving both richness and freshness. This juicy wine is ready to drink. (RV)" (11/2018) K&L Notes: Domaine Vico, the only vineyard located in Corsica’s interior, is located a one-hour drive south of St-Florent. The vineyard setting is magnificent, between 300 and 400 meters in altitude, with nearby peaks rising to 2,200 meters. In the summer growing season, daytime temperatures can reach 35°C, while at night they can drop to below 15°C. Domaine Vico has two parcels of vines. ...

2016 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

94 points Vinous: "Inky-purple. Captivating, broad brushstrokes of tar and licorice complicate aromas and flavors of dark plums, black cherry and cassis. Very clean, vibrant, dense Montepulciano d’Abruzzo that boasts lingering floral and mineral elements on the juicy finish. The best Italian release of Emidio Pepe’s Montepulciano d’Abruzzo in a long time (this wine is made from younger vines than the Old Vines selections available in the US). Really well done. 2016 Noster "Inicial" Priorat

Here is a Priorat that is not at all shy or trying to hide its Mediterranean origins, a richer, fuller bodied style especially considering its modest price. That said, the wine has become increasingly fresher, a development that is particularly apparent in this juicy, well delineated 2016. It is a well-balanced, tasty blend of Garnacha, Carignane, and just a tiny amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. Try this with your favorite recipe for braised or stewed lamb. 2016 Musella Valpolicella Superiore

Jancis Robinson: "Lovely, inviting red fruit nose. Lithe and a little racy on the palate. Wonderful, genuine and truthful. Worth every penny. 17/20 points. Drink 2018-2022. (WS)" (05/2018) K&L Notes: Musella is one of my favorite Amarone producers, as their wines have an elegance, a supple grace to them and don’t carry that "heavy" connotation that most would tag on Amarone. But to really understand Amarone, you must understand Valpolicella first! I really recommend my customers work their way up the chain to understand the base flavors that make Amaro ...

2016 Castel di Salve Armecolo

According to the importer, "Castel di Salve is owned by Francesco Winspeare, whose family moved from England to southern Italy in the 18th century. (10/2017) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a wine I enjoy regularly at home because it delivers consistent, easy-drinking satisfaction at a good value price. This is one of the first estates in Sicily (and indeed in Italy) to embrace a single-vineyard, or cru, winemaking philosophy. They make four top-tier expressions of Nero d'Avola from the Baroni, Bufaleffi, Maccari and San Lorenzo vineyards. It matured in French oak barrels and vats for ten months. There is a little less wine, as they definitively removed Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from the blend. It was partly aged in well-used French oak (20%) and tonels (30%) for 13 months, the rest in stainless steel. It comes in at 13.5% alcohol. The 2016 is 60% Grenache and 40% Carignan that was mostly destemmed and spent a full year in used barrels. Thrilling blue fruits, tar, rose petals, and a smoky, marine, iodine-like character all emerge from this full-bodied effort that opens up nicely with time in the glass. 2016 COS Pithos Rosso Anfora

60% Nero d’Avola/40% Frappato *Organic Wine* "Pithos" is almost the same wine as COS' Cerasuolo di Vittoria, save for an important distinction; the Nero D'Avola/Frappato blend ferments and ages in clay amphorae, thus losing DOCG status but gaining cult appeal -- as well as minerality and texture -- from these ancient aging vessels. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. This is a fine performance at the more basic end of the lineup.
