2016 Grand Napa Rutherford Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $135)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet-black in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford has a nose of cassis, violets, cedar and camphor with chocolate and aniseed in the background. Medium to full-bodied and grainy, it is earthy in the mouth, finishing long and mineral laced. (LPB) 94+" (12/2018) 92 points James Suckling: "Dark-plum, blackberry and chocolate aromas with a subtly leafy edge on the nose. The palate delivers a bright, assertive impression with redder plums, raspberries and a fresh, zesty finish. Drink or hold." (11/2 ...

2015 Happy Canyon Vineyards "Piocho" Santa Barbara County Bordeaux Blend (Elsewhere $30)

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Aromas of black plum, olive and bittersweet chocolate show on the nose of this Merlot-led blend, but it is the underlying minerality of crushed rocks and turned earth that’s most compelling. The palate is smooth, with everything from oak and cocoa to rose buds, violets and black currants. The tannins are expertly polished and the density is ideal." (07/2019) K&L Notes: Winemaker's Notes: "The wine has an attractive and seductive nose of sugarplum, black cherry and red clay with hints of toast and charcoal. On the palate the ...

2015 Opus One Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

98 points James Suckling: "Purity and brilliance on the nose with so much currant and flower character. Roses, currant bush and fresh leaves, too. Brightness is the word that comes to mind. Full-bodied and broad-shouldered. Juicy and so gorgeous now. Balance is so wonderful here. All about harmonious fruit and tannin balance. I like it slightly better than the excellent 2014. 81% cabernet sauvignon, 4% petit verdot, 7% cabernet franc, 6% merlot and 2% malbec. Drink or hold." 2017 Domaine Jamet Collines Rhodaniennes Syrah

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 IGP Collines Rhodanienne Syrah comes from a parcel grown on mica schist near the winery and a parcel on the plateau de Condrieu grown on granite. Unlike most of the reds here, it's destemmed. The wine then spends eight to ten months in used barrels (10-15 years old) prior to bottling. Scents of struck flint and crushed stone accent raspberry fruit on the nose, while the medium-bodied palate (the wine is only 12.5% alcohol) is supple. It finishes silky and bright, a sort of mini Côte Rôtie for early drink ...

2009 Léoville-Poyferré, St-Julien

100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The greatest wine I’ve ever tasted from this address is the 2009 Léoville Poyferré, which is a step up over both the 2000 and the 2010. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and the balance Cabernet Franc that hit 13.9% alcohol, it offers everything you could ask of a wine and reveals a saturated purple color as well as incredible notes of crème de cassis, blueberries, lead pencil, exotic Spices, and dried flowers. 1982 Lopez de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" Reserva Rioja

Lopez de Heredia has a well-earned reputation as the stalwart traditionalist of Rioja, along the lines of Mascarello in Barolo, Mayacamas in Napa Valley, or de Montille in Burgundy. What is arguably lost in all the attention paid to traditional winemaking, wine ageing and craft, is that Lopez de Heredia pioneered the single vineyard wine in Rioja, a tradition they still honor with each of their wines. These wines hail from well-sited, glorious individual vineyards. Viña Tondonia Reserva is always the most claret-like, with a sense of reserve and structur ...

Chewy tannins provide the framework while a note of star anise closes the finish. (KO)" (10/2016) 90 points James Suckling: "This shows delicate aromas of rosemary with red licorice and dried berries. The Hidden Block is one of the more delicate, acid-driven Pinots I have tasted from Varner. 2010 Altamura Napa Valley Sangiovese

One of the few California wineries producing a good Sangiovese, Altamura’s beautiful 2010 Sangiovese was made from tiny yields of 1.5 tons of fruit per acre (which probably explains its success) and was aged 24 months in primarily neutral oak. There is even a floral component lurking in the intricate aromatic profile. Loaded with notions of crème de cassis, blueberry, earth, chocolate, and graphite, it’s incredibly full-bodied and dense on the palate, with gorgeous purity of fruit. Rosso di Montalcino too often sits in the shadow of its much bigger brother, Brunello. Intense in terms of fruit, but showing off admirable acidity, this is spicy, full bodied, dry and rich with a softness hiding amid all that tannic structure.
