2017 Moulin de la Gardette "Cuvée Ventabren" Gigondas
Top Pick!
96 points Decanter: "Grown on sandstone and marl, the fruit for this wine is hand-picked, destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts then bottled without filtration or fining after maturation in old foudres. It's a beautifully natural expression of strawberry and raspberry fruits, with a juicy slick of crushed berries flowing across your tongue, ending with some massy, textural tannins. A perfectly balanced, joyful and drinkable expression of 2017 Gigondas with incredible purity. (MW)" (10/2018) 95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I loved the 2017 Gigondas Ven...

2017 Domaine de Verquière Côtes-du-Rhône
Top Pick!
The Verquière estate has been passed down from father to son for many generations and is now managed Thibaut Chamfort. Following age-old traditions and sustainable practices, the estate was recently certified organic. The Côtes-du-Rhône is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, grown on chalky clay soils with loads of large pebbles in the vineyards. Verquière recently returned to us after a long hiatus and we are pleased to have them back.

2015 Skylark "Red Belly" North Coast Rhône Blend (Previously $20) (Previously $20)
Top Pick!
90 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Another great value is the 2015 Skylark Red Belly, a deliciously gulpable blend of 42% Carignan, 30% Grenache, and 28% Syrah brought up in neutral barrels. It has loads of mulled cherries, red currants, leather, and peppery herb aromatics, medium body, a forward, supple, elegant texture, and a great finish, all making for a seriously easy quaffing, high quality red worth drinking." (11/2018) K&L Notes: Skylark is a micro-small winery operation spearheaded by two wine industry veterans cum San Francisco taste makers: John Lancast...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The silky 2016 Côtes du Rhône is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise. Cherries, garrigue and leather notes all come together in this medium to full-bodied but gentle, elegant wine. It's smooth from start to finish, with fine-grained tannins and hints of thyme that emerge on the finish. (JC)" (11/2018) Wine Spectator: "Gently mulled cherry and plum fruit glides through, with hints of warm fruitcake and melted red licorice. Offers a fruit-filled, modestly juicy finish. Drink now. (JM)" (11...

2017 Moulin de la Gardette "Tradition" Gigondas
Top Pick!
93 points Decanter: "Grown on clay-limestone and marl, the fruit is hand-picked with no destemming, and is aged in old foudres. The wine is pretty, bright and open, with raspberry, strawberry and violet fruits. It's barely medium-bodied, but has a lovely expression of fresh and easy red berry fruits, accompanied by a juicy berry acidity and gentle blackberry-skin tannins on the finish. An easy-going and highly drinkable Gigondas. Just lovely. (MW)" (10/2018) 93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The classic 2017 Gigondas Tradition cuvée from this estate is a real wi...

Wine Spectator: "Fresh and direct, with a violet and lilac frame around a core of cherry and cassis flavors, all carried by a warm stone note on the finish. Drink now through 2020. 5,250 cases made, 3,800 cases imported. (JM)" (10/2019) K&L Notes: Jacques Coipel worked in the petrol industry until 2002 when he decided to change career paths and enter the wine business. He purchased an exceptional site in the Côtes du Rhone Village Cru of Valreas. His vineyards sit at around 1,200 feet with a mix of clay, limestone and gravel making up the soils. With c...
Price: $12.99

91 points Decanter: "An assemblage of two different terroirs: yellow marls overlaid with large pebbles at higher altitude, and clay-limestone on the plain. The fruit is all hand-harvested, destemmed then fermented with gentle extraction. The wine is aged in large oak foudres for four months before bottling. It's deep and juicy, with appealing plum and blueberry fruits. There's more blackberry on the palate, along with dense tannins. It's very well balanced and well structured, with good length. A good value pick among the 2017 Rasteaus. (MW)" (10/2018) ...

2017 Mas de Sainte Croix "Passion d'Une Terre" Côtes du Rhône-Villages Valreas

91 points Wine Spectator: "Ripe and warm in feel, featuring blackberry and boysenberry puree flavors, supported by a graphite spine and carrying through an anise- and lavender-infused finish, all while the fruit easily keeps pace. Solid. (JM)" (10/2019) K&L Notes: Jacques Coipel worked in the petrol industry until 2002 when he decided to change career paths and enter the wine business. 2017 Baron de Montfaucon Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Top Pick!
93 points Wine Spectator: "Bright, with cherry, damson plum and raspberry coulis flavors streaming through, flanked by floral and rooibos tea hints and carrying through a racy, sanguine-tinged finish that is sneakily long. Well done. Best from 2020 through 2035. (JM)" (11/2019) K&L Notes: One of our most popular direct imports, the price-to-quality ratio we've found in these wines year after year is simply unbeatable. Our customers have come to rely on this family-run winery to provide great quality, drinkability and value. The 2014 was the first vint...

2015 Château de Montfaucon "Baron Louis" Lirac
Top Pick!
93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The rich, tannic 2015 Lirac Baron Louis spent a year in barrel, a year in tank and a year in bottle prior to release. It offers up scents of leather, cedar and vanilla, but it balances out the oak with dark fruit notes of cola, plum and spice. It's full-bodied and velvety on the palate, while hints of licorice emerge on the lengthy finish. This wine has clearly emerged as one of the top Liracs. (JC)" (11/2018) K&L Notes: An 88-acre estate, Château de Montfaucon sits just across the Rhône River from the esteemed...

2018 Bonny Doon Vineyard "Le Cigare Volant - Cuvee Oumuamua" Monterey County Rhône Blend
Top Pick!
93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Randall Grahm’s ever-evolving ideology shifted again for the new label and blend of this bottling, which includes 52% Grenache, 35% Cinsault and 13% Syrah. Aromas of plum, cracked pepper, crumpled carnations and dried mint lead into a bright, refreshing palate of hibiscus, anise and a curry-like spice. *Top 100 Wines of 2019* (MK)" (10/2019) 91 points Vinous: "Deep, shimmering red. Displays lively red berry, cherry and floral qualities on the nose, along with building suggestions of exotic spices and succulent herbs. Juicy a...

2017 Domaine de la Ganse Vacqueyras
Top Pick!
91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Vacqueyras La Ganse offers the classic ripe yet structured style of the vintage as well as terrific red and black fruits, peppery herbs, and garrigue aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, textured, and with ripe tannins, give bottles another year and it should keep for 7-8." (09/2019) K&L Notes: Coralie Onde is from the winemaking family behind Domaine les Ondines, but opted to start her own project independent of her family estate in 2008. She formed Domaine de la Ganse in Vacqueyras when she purchased some terrif...

Neal Martin writes: "Boekenhoutskloof is another of the few wineries of this scale that has undergone a lot of investment in recent years. I took a brief look at their barrel cellar, accessed through a long tunnel with winemaker Gottfied Mokke. “The first bottling that was done in the new cellar was the 2015,” he told me as I surveyed row upon row of barrels and several tiers high. “They are based on the OXO(2) revolving system so they don’t have to be moved to be racked. This has enabled us to shorten the élevage. The wines used to spend longer time in ...

2017 Chateau de L'Ou "Infiniment" Côtes Catalanes Rouge
Top Pick!
94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Cotes Catalanes Infiniment De L'Ou comes from vines around the estate, which is located on the lower plains of the Roussillon, not too far from the Les Aspres region. Awesome notes of blueberries, crushed violets, incense, toasted bread, and spice all give way to a perfumed, sweetly fruited, seamless red that has no hard edges and beautifully polished tannins. Drink through 2027." (09/2019) K&L Notes: Séverine Bourrier came to winemaking through her own passion for the subject, not having the family history associated w...

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A special cuvée for importer Eric Solomon, the 2015 Côtes du Rhône Reserve is a beauty that’s from a blend of 55% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 10% Carignan, and 5% each of Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault. Kirsch liqueur, black cherries, ground herbs, and garrigue notes all emerge from this this ripe, sexy, opulent Côtes du Rhône. Balanced and layered on the palate, with some serious oomph, it’s a smoking value! Drink through 2022." (02/2018)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An unusual southern Rhône blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache, the 2015 Lirac offers bright, juicy acidity and medium-bodied richness. Giving up lots of peppery notes, olive and darker fruits, it has good concentration and impressive purity. (JC)" (12/2016)

96 points Decanter: "Liquorice, spice and herbal aromas with a hint of reduction cede to a juicy, concentrated and layered palate with notes of spicy oak and blackberry. Classy, long and focused." (06/2019)

2017 Domaine de la Réserve d'O "La Réserve d'O" Terrasses du Larzac
Top Pick!
91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The primary production of the estate, the 2017 Terrasses du Larzac La Réserve d’O is a blend of 45% each Grenache and Syrah, plus 10% Cinsault. Aged in tank and amphorae, it's a delicious blend of cherries, raspberries and blueberries with garrigue and violets. Medium to full-bodied, it's silky in texture, with only soft, ephemeral tannins on the finish. (JC)" (05/2019) K&L Notes: We met Marie Chauffray at the Vinifilles tasting in January of 2015 in Montpellier. The Vinifilles (which means "wine girls") is an ...

The Little J Red is a bistro red blend consisting of 86% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre, 5% Cinsault, and 4% Grenache. This is an unprentious, generous wine made from a selection of vineyards in mainly the AgterPaarl area (part of the Paarl appelation). The predominant soils are Malmesbury Shale. These soils have a surprisingly good moisture retention capability which allows for dry-land farming in this relatively warm and dry area. The vineyards are a combination of traditional bush-vines and trellised blocks.

2018 Domaine de Fondrèche Ventoux Rouge
Top Pick!
92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2018 Ventoux Domaine is another winner that should be snatched up by savvy readers. A blend of 50% Grenache and 25% each of Syrah and Grenache, brought up in one-third each foudre, barrels, and concrete eggs, it offers a vivid bouquet of violet, ground pepper, bouquet garni, and both red and blue fruits. Medium to full-bodied, rounded, and polished, it has the fruit-forward charm of the vintage yet still packs ample concentration. Drink it over the coming 4-6 years (or more). Drink through 2025+" (08/2019) K&L Notes: Located...

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A blend of Grenache and Syrah that was brought up in a mix of clay tanks and 500-liter barrels, the 2017 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Compartir offers an awesome nose of black raspberries, crushed flowers, exotic spices, and earth, with just hints of subtle background oak. This full-bodied beauty has tons of charm, a layered, seamless texture, and enough structure to keep for upward of a decade. It’s just another brilliant wine from this great winemaker." (11/2018)

2016 Domaine Lafage "Bastide Miraflors" Côtes du Roussillon
Top Pick!
94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A wine that almost always over-delivers, the 2016 Côtes du Roussillon Bastide Miraflors is, I suspect, the finest vintage for this cuvée to date (it’s in the same league as the off-the-charts 2015). A blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache from Lesquerde and Saint Martin de Fenouillet (both in the northern part of the Roussillon), aged all in older barrels and concrete tanks, it boasts rockstar notes of ripe blackberry fruits, spice, dried garrigue, and hints of chocolate. Possessing a full-bodied, layered mouthfeel, sweet tannins, a...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Soft scents of pressed carnation, plum skin, game meat and curing spice form the nose of this Syrah-Grenache blend. The palate is smooth and creamy at first, but then offers firmly structured tannins that carry through to the dry, gripping close. Ripe fruit flavors abound, with spicy waves of blackberry, plum and boysenberry all dancing through the close. *Best Buy* (LB)" (10/2019) Jeb Dunnuck: "The base red from this estate is the 2017 Côtes du Roussillon Château De L'Ou, a mix of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre brought up al...

2017 Hahn "GSM" Central Coast Grenache/Syrah/Mourvedre
Top Pick!
90 points Vinous: "Inky ruby. Spice-accented blackberry, licorice and a hint of dark chocolate on the nose, along with a cracked pepper nuance that adds spicy lift. Plush cherry and dark berry flavors display a smooth, seamless character and put on weight with air. Shows good clarity on a warm, broad finish framed by rounded, harmonious tannins. (JR)" (11/2019) Wine Spectator: "A zesty little blend, with medium-bodied cherry and smoky cracked pepper flavors. (TF)" (10/2019)

91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The two special cuvées include the 2016 Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu Henrie Durieu, which has a terrific purity and elegance as well as ripe black cherries, plums, pepper, and spring flowers. While the Plan de Dieu can produce big, rustic wines, this is fresh, silky and complex." (08/2018)

94 points James Halliday: "Matured for 15 months in French oak (10% new). Richly robed in luscious fruits supported by gentle tannins and a dab of oak. It is well made (of course) and is strongly Barossan in temperament. What you make of this will depend on your personal preference." (08/2017) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro blend, the 2015 Plexus has a pale to medium garnet-purple color and nose of kirsch, red currant jelly and raspberry preserves with hints of Chinese five spice, hoisin, roses, black pepper and un...

The fruit for Chante Cigale's old-vine Côtes du Rhône comes from hand-harvested, 50-year-old vines in the Plan de Dieu, one of the finest lieux-dits in the CdR AOC. Composed of 70% Grenache, 20% Carignan, and 10% Syrah, the wine shows noble but restrained red fruit character along with notes of game and subtle spice. This is as serious as Côtes du Rhône AOC wine gets with the potential for aging up to 10 years in proper storage. It is ideal to pair with hearty country cuisine like Ratatouille, and it stands as one of the finest values in the store.

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A blend of the 2015 and 2016 vintages, the NV Côtes du Rhône S M checks in as the same equal parts Grenache and Syrah raised in tank and barrel. A huge nose of cassis, ground black pepper, garrigue, and olive tapenade gives way to a ripe, rounded, medium to full-bodied effort that has good acidity, building tannin, a seamless, light texture, and a great finish. It's a singular wine that has a big kiss of Northern Rhône Syrah with a touch of the rounded, sexy, opulent style of the south. It's going to drink nicely for a decade." (0...

2017 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Côtes-du-Rhône
Top Pick!
92 points James Suckling: "Abundant, rich and ripe red fruit with lightly spiced pastry and quite brambly complexity. The palate has a super fleshy, bold and upfront-tannin shape. Fresh and easy." (10/2019) 90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Still not yet bottled for my June visit (it was scheduled to be bottled at the end of the month), the final blend of the 2017 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel was showing plenty of garrigue and dried-spice notes layered over cherry fruit. Full-bodied, silky textured and long on the finish, it should...

Wine Spectator: "This has a ripe core of cherry and plum compote flavors backed by a light red licorice note on the juicy finish. (JM, Web only-2018)" K&L Notes: Assembled with the help of winemaker Bruno Gaspard, this cuvée is specially bottled exclusively for North Berkeley Imports. The blend of 92% Grenache and 8% Mourvèdre hails from vines averaging 45 years in age. Costières de Nîmes is at the southernmost part of the Rhône Valley sitting on the opposite bank of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. One of our best new finds is Domaine de l'Ermitage which produces three terrific values with eminent drinkability. The estate's history traces back to the 12th century when the winery produced wine for the pilgrims of Saint Jacques de Compostelle who were traveling the Santiago de Compostela. The property is now owned by the Castillon family, and today Michel and his son Jerome manage the vineyards and winemaking. The "Victor" is named ...

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Cuvée Romaine is another smoking vintage for this cuvée, and in my view, the best to date, surpassing the 2005, 2007, and 2009. Blackberry, peppery herbs, garrigue and hints of leather all emerge from this ripe, full-bodied, incredibly sexy, opulent beauty. With sweet fruit, a stacked mid-palate, no hard edges, sweet tannin and a great finish, this is rockingly good. Buy a case and drink it over the coming 7-8 years. 99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "As with the 2017, the 2016 Gigondas Clos des Tourelles comes from vines inside the village. It's noticeably deeper in color than the La Gille and gives up a huge bouquet of blueberries, violets, smoked duck, and crushed rocks. Deep, full-bodied, concentrated, and multi-dimensional, it has building tannin and a huge finish. It needs time, but wow, what a wine. Hats off to the Perrin family for this utterly sensational wine." (08/2018) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Aged entirely in foudres, the 2016 Gigondas Clos des T...

This cuvee is 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre brought up in concrete and foudres for a minimum of three years before release. " (02/2018) K&L Notes: This wine is gorgeous but reserved. Alain Corcia founded his negociant company back in 1983. Originally focused on bottling Burgundy, they expanded their grower relationships to include wines from the Rhone, Bordeaux and even Champagne. Our relationship with Alain goes back over three decades and he and his wife Patricia have supplied us with some of our greatest values from their respective regions. As a negociant, Alain is very hands on with the wines, making each one in its home region and choosing not to blend across appellations, all the better to reflect each wine's true terroir. ...

Top Pick!
"My name is Sophie Guiraudon and I am a winemaker since ZERO generation!", says Sophie proudly. Sophie was working in other peoples' wineries in southern France for years. In 2000, Sophie started her own bio-dynamic, organic winery. She wanted to grow grapes that her son could eat right off of the vines. The "Lolo de l'Anhel" is typically a blend of 81% of Carignan, 10% of Syrah, 7% of Grenache Noir, and 2% Mourvèdre. The grapes are hand picked, gently vacuum pressed, and finished with 100% tank aging.

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Longtime readers will know that I love this cuvée, which is year in, year out, one of the great value buys out there. The 2017 Terrasses is even better than the 2016 and ranks with the finest vintages I’ve tasted, matching the stunning 2010. The essence of kirsch liqueur, wild strawberries, and wildflowers flow to a full-bodied, plump, deep, beautifully layered and sexy wine that has medium to full body, ripe tannins, notable minerality, and a great finish. Its ruby/plum color gives way to a great nose of blackberries, ground pepper, herbes de Provence, and licorice. Medium-bodied, with plenty of fruit and good balance, it’s California's answer to an outstanding Côtes du Rhône." (10/2019) K&L Notes: Curt Schalchlin is owner/winemaker/sole employee of Sans Liege, a Cal-Rhône dynamo from the Central Coast. Schalchlin made his first b...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Cuvée Alis Estate (66% Grenache, 22% Mourvèdre and 12% Syrah) is a hefty, high-octane style (15.6% alcohol) with loads of kirsch liqueur, pepper, lavender, earth and underbrush. It is Provençal, deep, full-bodied, and a total lusty treat. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. 2017 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Top Pick!
95 points Decanter: "At Beaucastel the Grenache and Cinsault are fermented in cement while the Syrah and Mourvèdre are fermented in foudre. The result features finely pixellated fruits of the forest on the nose, with a full-bodied but mightily fresh and lively palate. The Mourvèdre element is strong this year, bringing vibrancy and power. It's firmly savoury, very dry and dramatic. A very tannic year has produced a seriously structured Beaucastel for the long term. (MW)" (10/2018) 95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape is another sunny, b...
